Purchased used trailer w/ no title

I just picked up a 1992 14' jon boat with 9.9 hp evinrude. Boat came with a trailer. Seller had the title to the boat, but not the trailer. He doesn't remember ever having one, but the trailer had good tags. The whole rig only cost me $1200. What do I need to do to get the trailer registered in my name? Buyer and Seller both from Maryland. Thanks,
Ken

Re: Purchased used trailer w/ no title

Try to call the trailer man. with the serial # on the trailer. I recently had to call Road King and get a new cert. of Origin to satisfy NCDMV so I could get a plate for mine. NC created a title based on the cert of origin. I would first call maryland's dmv and ask them what you need first.

Being originally from MD, I believe he had to have a title to get the tags (well, tag). Unless the tag doesn't really belong to that trailer. Is there a registration card that matches the tag?

Re: Purchased used trailer w/ no title

If MD has different tax rates for boat, motor and trailer; learn what those rates are before you start the process. There might even be a grandfather clause that exempts paperwork for trailers over a certain age.

Another option is to find a close-by state that doesn't require boat trailers to be tagged and claim that it came from one of those states (if the time and paperwork factor make this option viable.) In the case of a small-value item, the overriding interest for the DMV is to establish a revenue stream. Tell the clerk a believable story and it'll probably pass muster.

some states don't issue titles for trailers
here in NJ you need a bill of sale with the make ,model, serial # and it has to be signed by the previous owner and also notarized along with the copy of registration

there' is a company somewhere that will aquire a tittle for you I think they charge $75 I know someone who uses them to aquire car titles

I can find out for you if you need it

I bought a jet ski with galvanized trailer in Georgia. No title OR tags on the trailer. I went to the Floriduh tag office with the bill of sale and they issued the new title and tags, no questions asked.

State laws vary. What works in FL may not work for you in another state.

The only thing you can do is go to a tag agency and try to get the trailer tag and boat put under your name. If they let you then great. If not then they will tell you what you are missing.

Then go to another tag agency - only this time tell them you made the trailer yourself.

And if that does not work, go to yet another tag agency with another story. Keep doing this till one of them does it. Then you are golden.

Re: Purchased used trailer w/ no title

Ken,

Take the existing tag in to the MVA and see if they can pull up record of it. If so, it should be as simple as getting a replacement title issued to the previous owner (it's like $20 and he'll have to request it). Once he has that, he signs it over to you and you apply for the new title.

Canyou read the VIN? If not, the MVA will have to issue a new serial no. plate and the trailer will be titled as "home-built". No big deal though.

I also bought a sailboat which was trailered from Michigan on a trailer w/no plates. (???). I was told I can register w/NYS DMV as a homemade trailer that was never registered before....not sure that that applies to your trailer. If they had the plates (unless stolen) it has to be registered.

NFW to get it titled in MD without having title in hand. However, you can register it as a homemade trailer and if it has no brakes, no inspection.

RE: Purchased used trailer w/ no title

G'Day. I presume the seller gave you a bill of sale and a receipt and there was no title for the trailer. You may need to have the county sherrif inspect your trailer and with the bill of reciept and a form from the sherrif you take it to your DMV and apply for a title. Here in Idaho we have not titled trailers but have registered them. I sold my boat out of state and I did the above for the buyer and he titled the trailer in Oregon. Good luck and cheers, Gary

Re: Purchased used trailer w/ no title

If the trailer was homemade you can get it inspected and registered as home made. If it's not home made and you register it that way you have committed fraud! If it's not home made and you have no paperwork, call your insurance agent and buy a bond ~$100 The tag office will accept a bond as if it were proof of ownership, if later the trailer is proven to belong to someone else there's no harm no foul, the insurance company will pay you back, unless you stole it and the real owner can prove it.
