Default Who has sold a boat online?

I'm selling a boat and am considering posting the ad on one of the online trader pages. Has anyone had any luck using this method? Most of them cost around $30 to $50. My boat is selling for less than $4000. At a minimum I will probably break down and join the captains club...then I can post the ad here.

Thanks,
Charlie

Charlie,

The trading dock is great place to sell and if you want to do it on the Web then Boat Trader Online works great for me. If its priced right consider it gone IMHO.

Boattrader online worked for me.
I sold my old Mako 20 in less than 72 hours.
The buyer was over a thousand miles away.

Sold my Checkmate 2 years ago through a free ad on a speedboat site. Also sold my Hydra Sport on a fee ad on Fl. Sportsman.

Gotta love the web!

I sold my last boat through a local fishing forum. I couldnt believe the amount of responses to my ad.

Also a coworker of mine just purchased a boat through the Trading Dock here on THT. The boat was in NC and we are in Maryland.

Boattrader.com was the ticket for me last year, I had it in the local papers first and that just seemed to bring phone calls then I put it online and to tell you the truth it only had one inquiry but it was a serious one and the boat was sold.

I had my boat listed on the local wand ad with very few calls. Then I advertised it on another website I belong to and I got several more calls asking questions. A few days later I posted some pictures and I had call after call about it. I had three people make appointments to see the boat. The first guy to look at it bought it at a reasonable price for the both of us. Pictures work. Post them in your ad if possible.

I sold a 1993 Mako I had to guy from Connecticut (sp?) I had the boat adverstised online. The guy drove down and purchased the boat and drove the boat back home. He sent me a letter about the trip back. Very interesting. Selling online is very productive...just look at all the boat listed on the various online sites.

On THT's Trading Dock, I've sold a truck, a pair of rod holders, and a prop. Though I had my boat listed there also, it sold via boattrader.com. The eventual buyer contacted me within 48 hours of the initial ad posting, then he came for the test ride the following week. The Internet will get your ad out there, so the key to a quick sale is pricing the item attractively. Good luck.

Default Be alert for scams.

I've read several reports lately when someone, usually from overseas, will offer to buy your boat, car, etc. and then send a cashiers check for more than the agreed on price. You will be asked to cash the check and return the excess cash. Weeks later when your bank finds the check to be forged, you get stuck for the entire amount.
good luck

I too are among the many who have purchased and sold boats online...one time I set up a website and descussed in detail the merits of the boat I was selling, I then went to boattraderonline.com and posted it there...in about a week or so, the boat was sold...and this was in the middle of winter...and I got the price I was looking for! Another time I really couldn't be bothered with all the phone calls and setting up appointments...I contacted a local dealer who I actually went to school with and worked out a deal with him to show the boat for me...I can't remember what the comission was but I think 10% sounds right...(the boat was a 16' Carolina skiff that I sold the the better part of $2500...so it was worth it to me...)...again, I set up a website and posted it on various sites...and a guy from Washington DC bought the boat...

I think it also depends upon what kind of boat you are selling, some boats, regardless of how you list them are going to sell, whalers are one of them, as long as they are priced appropriately...

Good luck!

Charlie,

Boattraderonline is probably going to give you the most people seeing your add that are in our area. I don't know if you deal at all with Jesse's Marine. http://www.jessesmarine.com/BoatSales.html They're not brokers but they will post it on their web site for you.

And, the Captains Club membership is a bargain when you think of all the advice that this site offers.

Regards,
Dave

Sold 2 on Boat Trader. One to a guy in Michigan, the other to a guy in Oklahoma. Both drove to Nashville and had cash to buy, trailered home.

I had my old boat listed here on THT and on boattrader.com. It sold through the ad on boattrader. In defense of THT, that was a while ago and THT did not have nearly the traffic it has now. I believe the trading dock here is now a viable place to sell a boat.

Good luck,
