Default Digital selective calling GPS/Radio combination

I would like to install a marine radio with the digital selective calling feature on our center console. I am curious if anyone has had a combination of GPS and, radio with this feature, that they are happy with.

I am considering the Garmin 540S as the GPS. According to Garmin this unit will link to any radio with the DSC feature.

I am considering the Raymarine 21 8E VHF as the radio.

I have my garmin gps hooked up to a standard horizon Quest-x. The quest-x (not the regular quest) can display your lat, long, cog, sog, and time as well when you make the nema connections

The brands you pick for GPS and VHF won't make much of a difference in terms of working together although some VHFs will be able to display more data than others as part of their feature set. To allow the GPS and VHF to "talk," you will be connecting NMEA wires between the units. The GPS need to send lat/lon data to the VHF, and the VHF sends position data it receives from other boats' DSC radios to the GPS to plot their locations. Remember that your VHF will only receive position data from other boats if they allow it.

I use ICOM VHFs with Raymarine E-series units and everything works great. Re-post your question on the Electronics forum and you'll get more input. THT member bluewaterpirate has made a video of DSC calling in action that's useful for beginners. here's the link to the thread:

180 bw,

I don't know about the capabilities of the Garmin to display a position received via a DSC-capable radio, but I can only presume that it can do it. The harder thing to find (but getting much easier) is a VHF that can provide the NMEA output to the plotter. They Raymarine 218 is such a radio, and a good choice. Other compatible radios include the ICOM M604 and the M504.

This has been discussed repeatedly in the "Electronics Forum." You should try a search there using "DSC." It's likely that you can scroll through a couple pages of threads and see somthing that way as well.

Good luck!

The gps and vhf do not have to be same brand.

they have to:
communicate via Nmea 2000
transmit and receive location
display location.
Be DSC compatible

and most important and most often missed:
Your gps must be able to display another boats location on its gps chart screen.

That way you can track a friends boat and head to it via gps chart display.

You can get the mmsi number from WestMarine/Boat US.

Not neccessary but sure handy.

I found out the hard way, not all DSC radios can recieve polling data for this purpose even though they can send yours.

Good luck!

I think Standard has an all-in-one GPS/DSC VHF/hailer in their line.
