Are you refferring to the suitecase generator? If so I would avoid it or consider it a throwaway after 5 years.

I have been looking at Nextgeneration or Phasors 3.5KW ,both seem to be very good units. I want to hear one run first though. The mase is a 3600 RPM unit. The one I heard and saw in operation did not impress me.

I shopped about 3 years ago for a diesel genset and went with a 3.5kW Next Gen. So far so good, no issues or problems at all in the first 100hrs. I liked the lower rpm of the NextGen compared to the Mase.

I know that Nextgen makes a good unit for restricted space applications.

I had a Mase (bigger - foget the KW but around 6KW) in 1986 The thing never worked right, went through 3 sets of "brushes" in 2 years and the third set was hard to find. Then the motor seized adter 3 years. Dumped it and wrote it up to a learning experience - don't skimp to save a few bucks on untried product that I never heard of.

As I said that was in 1986 and a lot can change in 21 years, but you still don't hear them as "mainstream"

Mase use Yanmar diesels for power. Yanmars are good engines. I know a couple of people who have them and are quite happy.

Thank You for your input.I was looking for a unit small and light enough to fit in an engine compartment with two volvo ad31's, freezer compressor, furnace and water heater and the boat is a Monaro 27.We run the Great Lakes and some water (river marinas) are very skinny; so weight is a Issue.

I have a mase 4.0, other than impeller change, no issues so far. Very easy to service in cramped areas.

Thanks for all your input.I finally decided on a 2.4Kw portable gas from Yamaha;guiet, will store in engine compartment and relatively good on fuel although we have carry extra fuel cans(gas). There are not many dealers for marine gensets in my area;southern Ontario;Great Lakes.

You must be looking to blow yourself up eh?

If you buy a portable generator and put it in the engine compartment you are setting yourself up for a catastrophic explosion. Don't say you were not warned!

I was on a new Shamrock Mackinaw that used a Mase 2.5. The most notable thing to me is that it was LOUD!
See if you can hear one run before you drop the jingle. It was a real turnoff for me.

Norca,

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT put the yamaha Generator in the engine compartment. Fumes can spill out from the genset and one spark and you and your family will be DEAD. I am not trying to sound like an ass, I am trying to save your life, and the lives of those aboard your boat. You never put ANYTHING in the engine compartment that isn't marine certified, ignition protected, or meant to be there.

Store the generator somewhere in the cockpit away from the motor hatch, and if the generator has an on off vent on the fuel cap like my Honda does, shut it OFF so that you limit the chance of fumes eminating from the generator.
