I really would not reccomend using Wikipedia as a reference to prove your points.... ...thats like using John Stewart to get your news.

I don't know if I would trust a fid splice, it just loops into hollow rope, (not line)and is held there like Chinese fingers. I eye splice I think is better.
Huh? me thinks you are confused

I fid is a tapered wooden tool used to open the lays of a three strand line to SPLICE it or a small metal tapered tool to measure and thread when splicing double braid, a marlinspike is typical used to splice wire rope.Wikipedia says so!

I splice all of my own lines. The bitter ends are Flemished on the dock and there are no "Irish pennants" to be seen anywhere on my vessel.

I do all my own splicing. I use three strand nylon, and buy it by the spool. Its cheaper than stuff in plastic bags. And you can put an eye, or backsplice, or end-to-end wherever you need one. Custom dock lines you can leave on the dock to pick up are really nice. Makes it easy to tie up just the same way everytime.

You can splice onto anchor chain, or put nice neat loops thru your fenders that have no knots and fit your cleats exactly etc. Nice little skill to develop, and its not hard.
And my eye splices around thimbles come out better than the store-bought ones...no slack in them.
