Default Is Permatex aviation gasket sealer OK substitute for OMC adhesive M ?

Changing water pump on my 1999 Johnson 9.9. Shop manual calls for OMC adhesive M in a couple spots. To retain the O ring in the housing for instance. I've always used Mercury bellows adhesive for this type of application, but I don't have any in the garage and marine suppliers aren't readily available in this area. Found Permatex aviation gasket sealer locally and it seems like it'd be an OK substitute for this application, but I wanted to check with the knowledgeable folks on here to see what they think.

Please let me know.

Thanks.

If it’s holding an oring in a groove so it doesn’t shift out of place I’ve found that a thick marine grease like Evinrude/Johnson triple guard works better that gasket sealers like Permatex Aviation or OMC gasket sealer. Even though my OMC shop manual says to use the OMC gasket sealer for the oring on the Cobra impeller housing and the Cobra water passage I have found that the triple guard works better, keeps them from shifting out of place....

Use marine grease like Lou said or o-ring lube
I prefer the o-ring lube. If you get to much of the grease in there the o-ring doesn't seat well

Just to follow up, after doing some research, I arrived at the following products for substitutes for the OMC products:

As a substitute for OMC adhesive M, I used 3m weatherstrip adhesive: 3M Black Super Weatherstrip Adhesive 5oz (autozone.com)

As a substitute for OMC gasket sealing compound, I went with Permatex aviation gasket sealer: Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket No. 3 Sealant (4 oz.) 80019: Advance Auto Parts
