What am I missing... Help me ask the right questions. I have gotten a quote of $12,220 to do a complete Overhaul of a crusader 4.3l 6 cylinder. They are reusing my block, camshaft and crankshaft. Everything else replaced new...oil pump, main bearings rod and thrust bearings, pistons, heads, water pump, starter etc....still...all my research shows high end should be $7,000. I got another quote of $3150. Even one for $1600 but did not include taking the engine out or reinstall.
I remember quoting a rebuild on a 454 Crusader was under 8k.
the range of quotes seem extreme.

How busy are they? I know several guys that when they get really busy they can double their pricing because at that point they are pulling 18+ hr days and that is the only way to make it worth while.

The problem is nobody wants to work on inboards when there are outboards on all the transoms filling up their shops. Working conditions are so much better than in an engine room, and boats that are gas powered are not big enough to have a comfortable engine room to work in (nor does the owner deep enough pockets). Definitely wanted you to go away, but did it in a polite manner.

Sounds like a lot, a new reman is $2k another $2k in misc parts and another $3k in labor.

Long block reman 2K or very good machine shop rebuild 3K
Ad in 2K for new exhaust and maybe 1k for alternator, starter and other accessories.
the labor could be 2K at about 20 hours maybe $2,500
$8,500 should be close to your cost so call 10k the high number it’s pretty easy to figure the parts cost. The labor is subjective to who does the job. There certainly is not 10K in labor or 100 hours to replace a 4.3.

It's South Florida. Everything is through the roof right now. But yes. That's a "We don't really want to do it, but we will for this" price.
