Deep drop fishing
#1

I have fished offshore 100 + miles out...over 100 times. I never tried deep dropping.
this year I want to try for tilefish and wreckfish during my northeast canyon trips .
I am looking at a daiwa tanacom 1000. I know there are better professional reels out there, but this fits my budget .
It states retrieve assist. Does this mean I manually reel the fish and use electric retrieve to check bait ? Or use electric power all the time ? Those in the deep drop know how.... I would appreciate some info for this deep drop rookie..
thank you

The Diawa retrieve rate is like one to one. Only use it from when the rig is about 30 feet from the boat.

Great reel for that purpose. We had two, mounted on short bent butt DD rods with swivel tips from Pinnacle Marine. Spooled with 880yds of 80# Jerry Brown.
Fished 300ft to 1200 ft with no problem. Put your bait at the water, hit the reset, then drop it. Reel keeps track of line out, even as you adjust for depth. Hit the power retrieve and it will level wind all the way up. Beeps at 8m, 6m and 4m below the surface, then stops at 2m below the surface. Then you have perfect control to bring the fish in.
We fished these from the aft rod holders on the gunwale, with swivel inserts. Made everything so easy. Large Blueline Tiles, Golden Tiles, Wreck Fish, and strings of five Black Bellied Rosefish from really deep.
