Default Contender Livewell

31 Open... how does one make the livewell fill up completely so the baits don’t bump their heads? Cover the overflow? If so is there a recommended “cover”?

There should be a valve on the drain so that you can adjust the rate of flow exiting the well.

Open the bilge hatch, under the deck if you look towards the stern, is the valves. Pull them downwards and you will pressurize the wells.

The two Contenders I had came with a ball valve in the bilge on the 2 overflow hoses. You just need to close them only enough to keep the live well filled and not sloshing. Also if the engines are ever put in reverse you need to get in the habit of cutting the pumps off and then back on when in forward. Otherwise you can get an air lock at the pumps from the props blowing aerated water on the pickup. If that happens your first indication will be dead bait. Don't ask me how I know this.

My 23 open did. It's not a bad idea to open and close all the valves in the bilge so they don't seize up.

You can buy the Gemlux adjustable fill and drain to adjust the amount of flow. I just adjust the ball valve until its where I want it on my 31.

I have never seen a contender without overflow valves. Bait wells are one of the things they do right.

In the back the big valves in the euro transom have to close almost fully. Also have to close the bottom valves right in the from of the bilge access.

Seems like a drain hole insert or cover could work too

Anyone have a picture of the two overflow valves location ? I am plumbing my 27 open livewell because it wasn’t came plumbed from factory. The pickup is in place and a drain also but the drain is small like 3/4 or 1”. I was thinking on putting a 11/2 drain or overflow not sure the right way to call it. Wondering if I really need a bigger drain now that I am reading you need to close the overflow to keep the livewell full

for an easy fix - we would use the plastic pouch from a sabiki to place over the overflow for a quick fix.

That’s a hell of a lot easier than getting to those valves

This is a genuine question. What’s more important the bait not bumping their head or enough oxygen? I am under the impression that closing the valve to restrict the flow will affect the water quality. I am right now removing the overflow valve on my 27 because I was told the adequate size is 1 1/2”.
anyone willing to school me before I waste my time. Thanks.
