New Counter lower unit goes in reverse when throttle is in forward
#81

If you look at the shifter where the cable attaches it will be attached at either the top portion of the lever or the bottom. If it's at the bottom the cable is pulled when the shifter is pushed forward and pushed when pulled back. Vice Versa if attached at the top. You need to move the cable to get it to shift properly. I keep telling you I went through the same thing and I had the SAME CONCERNS as you until my dealer explained that the changed the shift pattern on newer LU's
Easy fix... Fix at binnacle. Confirmation of repair can be checked on the motor. Forward indicator visually in reverse and reverse in forward.(take both cowlings off for visual confirmation,,)

Update: Spoke to a very knowledgeable shop owner down in cutler ridge called USA Power boats. He confirmed that the new fleetmasters are a verado gearcase and the one I have is the correct one. All verado gearcases (standard and counter LU's ) shift clockwise for forward and counter clockwise for reverse. Mercury told me the opposite on several calls with them because the part number does not indicate any change since its a new part number.
Rdiesel01 was correct that the port controls need to be adjusted to match the starboard control for it to work properly.
