Default Troubleshooting Help me understand kohler 5e choke/linkage

New to me boat came with a non running generator. The broker had a mechanic out and he replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, and carb. The generator started and ran but would shut down after 5 minutes. The mechanic suggested to let it cool and add coolant which I did with no luck. I started working on my own and replaced the thermostat and burped the air out of the system with a pump and hose barb on top. Started the gen and it ran under load for a good 30 minutes no issues!

I shut it down for about 30 minutes while I was cleaning up getting ready to head out to get some gas and fired it up. It ran for a few minutes before it started hunting and shut down. After I got back the only way I could get it to start was to hold the spring linkage open and it would hunt for awhile then shut down. I can see the linkage moving back and forth while it’s hunting. In its current state it cranks but won’t fire anymore. One thing I noticed is the the linkage with no spring is completely loose no resistance it just flops back and forth. How do I adjust the choke? The round black cap also turns without loosening any screws. does this adjust anything? Any videos or documentation on adjusting troubleshooting the choke?

One of our club smart guys thinks even though the carb is new that it’s probably gunked up again. Any suggestions?

I had a Kohler 5e. It had similar symptoms when the carb was fouled. Also seemed to pay to change the spark plugs when it started acting up. Tough genny to keep running, best of luck!

the black plastic round thing is the choke. It has to have the spring inside attached to the copper winding inside or it will hunt and never run right and sometimes just plain never run.
