Default Yamaha 150 Temporarily Lost Fuel Efficiency

I realize there are many possibilities to my question, but I'd still love to hear different theories so I know what I might need to check.

Ran offshore today (about 35 miles each way) with a lighter load than usual (3 souls rather than 4 onboard).

Cruising about 22mph when my Yamaha Command Link Plus (digital rectangular version) stopped showing current speed and the MPG fluctuated from .4mpg to .9mpg. I figured something was blocking the speed sensor hole and thought nothing of it as my Garmins still showed my current speed.

I've made this trip several times with heavier loads and typically use about 1 - 2 bars worth of fuel each way. I noticed very early that I lost 1 bar of fuel then had about half the tank gone by the time we get to the fishing grounds. This was enough of a concern that we cut our trip short and returned to inshore instead.

Conditions were ok and we weren't struggling against too much swell. We didn't see any fuel leaking into the water.

The only thing possibly related is that there was one piece of sea grass that was inside the lower unit pickup holes and I brushed that aside. After doing so, my command link started registering the speed and MPG again. However, even when it was averaging 2.5 - 3 MPG and 7GPH, I was losing about 14+ gallons per hour.

Tank was filled up the night before and even had excess gas that dropped out because the auto stop didn't do its job properly.

To be fair, boat seemed to run fine and my MPG and GPH looked normal by the end of the day.

It's almost as if the fuel tank/gauge "sped through" the middle part of my fuel bars then settled down once it got to the 4th bar remaining.

I hope that makes sense. I plan to fill up, calibrate the tank/gauge (never done it before) and see if I can duplicate the issue.

We also checked the outboard grounds to see if that might be causing electronic gremlins with the Command Link.

Thank you.
