Default "redone" 31 contender purchased

So this is about a recent purchase I made of a 31 contender which a dream turned south really quick. So all in all its to tell many of you looking to by a restored contender or any hull be careful and ask for pictures trust no one. Found the boat in miami listing stated the boats fuel tanks where redone in 2014 by the original owner which was a close friend of his. Then the second owner was the one that repowered and rewired the boat in 2018. Also he stated the the seadeck was installed in the summer of 2019 because his wife stated the non skid that was done after the fuel tanks were replaced was too grainy and would scuff the kids' knees. Being so excited we took the boat out to fish for the first time and we did great although the blood on the deck was a mission to clean because of the seadeck. We then decided to remove the seadeck the following weekend and found the screws on the center hatch protruding! thought it could be screwed down boy was i wrong. We then took it to our fiberglass guy and had him remove the center deck to see what we had. Once we lifted the center hatch it was full of water. We then decided to cut the saddles deck and see what we had there. That was even worse, the deck was screwed down to 2x4 wood pieces on both saddle tanks. Things I learned sad to say, trust no one and seadeck can cover a whole lot. I contacted the guy that did the fiberglass work. At first we spoke for a bit seemed nice; he told me he rememberers the boat etc. All was good until I sent him the pictures of his "great work" and of course he disappeared. Anyhow here are some pictures.... AGAIN TRUST NO ONE GET PICTURES AND RESEARCH ON WHO DID THE WORK SOME PEOPLE ARE DIRT BAGS...

Sorry to hear you are this happened to you.

Could you explain a little better the issue? The screws were protruding from the deck? Guess the screws holding down the center hatch?
Did the 2x4's make the fuel tank install unsafe? Untreated wood certainly wouldn't last as long as a non-wood alternative.

That sucks! Sorry for your luck.
Expose the seller and the good people of THT will bombard him with messages and get your money back!

So the decks on the older 31's begin to bow over time which is a known issue so when you redo the tanks you are suppose to recore the deck to reinforce it and straighten it back. The 2x4's are to i guess hold the deck down which is a bad idea sooner or later it will rot really dumb idea. The correct way is to have the tanks come up pretty close to the top and glass the deck back to where you cut. Apparently they cut the deck wrong and had no where to glass too. The screws were screwed down to an aluminum bracket of some sort so that stayed in place while the deck bowed. Which this caused the screws to come out.

You would think but the original owner was located up in Stewart, Fl where the tanks where "redone" and deck was glassed back. The boat was then brought to Miami where it was repowered by the second owner.

I’m a Cuban from Miami and won’t buy a boat from a Cuban in Miami especially a “redone” contender. If it’s on CL, offer up or listing is in Spanish I’ll pass. I remember that boat. It’s the Miami F in way.

quick search and found it. Sorry for your situation, pretty crappy of seller to try and hide stuff like that. I took a ton of pics when we “redid” our 31 open for the sole purpose of when we go to sell it. I’ve got a ton of documentation but I got no desire to sell it anytime soon. You’ll be stoked once it comes back 100%. Would like to see pics of the fix

Yup that's the way to do it! Take a lot of pictures and document the steps. Ill keep this going as the work gets done. Also seller stated that he had no cluethe deck was damaged that the deck was fine when he installed the seadeck. I went back and forth for a bit and gave up. Yes it will be an amazing boat.

same here but I will buy a boat in Miami although my scam alert radar is on full blast. Typically the dead give away is the price, too good to be true probably a problem somewhere, a sinker, cooperss boat etc. Buyer beware for sure and perform your due diligence,,, seadeck I hate for this reason, easy to mask something,,, Too much shitty after market work is another dead giveaway,,, cushions, aluminum, etc,,,

again, this is terrible that it happened to you regardless of who and where the work was done. a friend of mine had the same experience with a broker and seller in the deep south and was taken for a ride even though he is an experienced boater. the lesson to learn is to have visual inspections done of the tanks regardless of what is on the deck. hope it works out for you.
