Yanmar/Bravo X drives
Looking at a 37 Spectre with 6LPA Yanmars/Bravo X drives. Gimbals have been replaced in 2017, engines were pulled, media blasted and repainted as well as most of the major exhaust components were replaced, new couplers, etc.
What do I need to be worried about, what are the pitfalls? From what I have been able to find as long as the maintenance is performed as scheduled I should be able to get 5000 hours out of these engines (currently at 1200). What am I looking for the lifespan of the drives? I'm normally an outboard person but this boat has me very intrigued. |
Keeping the boat in saltwater?......Pass
Otherwise, your future will include large wallet draining events. That is a complicated and expensive engine/drive combo to be pickling in saltwater. |
Boat will be run in Saltwater but otherwise kept on a trailer or dry stacked.
Flushed after every use. |
Not familiar with those drives, but you need to verify that water stays off of the engines. Good seal to engine box. Saltwater sitting in the bilge will put the engines in a salt air environment when running. HD Corrosion X sprayed on everything in the engine compartment will preserve the enegine for many extra years, but the stuff stays gooey so messing with the engine is a mess once coated. What is the age of the drive train? THe life cycle of the engine is surely effected by living in the bilge no matter how much you spend to replace corroded parts.

The Yanmar engines are great, but having said that not sure why engines removed and repainted unless heavy corrosion is the issue, which means it will come back.
I have inboard yanmars for over 20 years and they are amazing engines, long ago I owned an I/O boat and service family members I/O boats and I would not buy another I/O. Given where outboards are today I would go that route.... Just my 2 cents. |
Diesel & Bravo X = $$$$ everyone I know who has a diesel and BravoX drive has blown up at least one drive if not multiple drives.

If drives have 1200h I' ll pass
If stays in water I' ll pass bravo 3X + diesel = lot $$$ Ask me. |
