We are just about to re-power my oldest sons boat, currently it has a 1989 48spl that runs great but has an exhaust leak coming from the gasket between the power head and the lower section of the motor. Sounds easy but the problem is, once upon a time, before I owned it, someone replaced the bolts that keep the power head on with hardened steel bolts....so you can imagine the state they are in especially since I have now had the boat 9 years and we ain't exactly on a freshwater lake.
If someone wanted to take the time to drill them out and retap or heli-coil, it could get someone into a running motor on the cheap. It still runs good, just had a tuneup, water pump recently etc.
I hate to toss it in the trash if I can get something for it. Do y'all think it has any value in its current state?

My Son got a 1988 40 horse Johnson in need of repair for a labor trade of about $300 worth of work cleaning and sanding the guys boats. Took him a couple weeks working like teenagers do. We tore it down and replaced the impeller, thermostat and head gasket. One of the bores is pretty trashed but it still runs great on the skiff we fixed up. it's worth $300-500 as parts pretty easy.

ok, thanks for the replies. I also have it on a CMC Tilt/Trim unit which I assume has some decent value as well. So maybe $500-700 for the package seem about right to yall? Or yall think better to list them separate?

Modify the cowling to allow the engine carb to breath and keep using it.
