This is just the tip of the iceberg for Luhrs. The 2003 44 Luhrs my friend owns has a tower with failing welds due to bulkheads separating from the deck and hull, a crack in one stringer, poor structural construction with attempts to cover-up mistakes and failure to cover warranty repairs. --Garrett

After reading this entire thread--I must have missed the inception since I was traveling when it first appeared--I am amazed that Luhrs is still producing these boats. But it is not just Luhrs--many of the boats built today have the same types of defects. The smaller boats seem to get away with it--because the defects are not critical. But to spend $600K (now $700K or more for a new boat)--and have any of these problems is in-excusiable.

It is epidemic in the entire industry--sure there are some good manufactuers with good quality control--but there are a lot of boat builders who do not have good quality control. To make things worse, they use techniques in building which are not proper, and know it. Many designers are not naval architects, but "boat designers"--this has gone on a long time. A NA designs one hull--then modify it multiple times.

I purchased a new boat a year ago--no where near the cost of these boats, but it had multiple problems. I had a boat by the same manufactuer (same name anyway--the company had been sold) built in 1992, and it was a superb boat--excellent build. Recently I purchased a 2003 second boat by the same manufactuer, as a boat to keep on the West Coast. I got it very in-expensively because of defects found at a survey done by another person. The defects were serious and due to sloppy manufactuering and QA. I repaired the defects--and the factory stood up and paid for the repair, even though the boat was under second ownership. I see many of these boats and they all have the same defects--and the owners don't know enough to know that there is a probelm.

oWe say, sure its the "cheap" boats--my new boat only cost about $140K.. (not cheap in my book). But I talk with owners of some very high end trawlers 47 to 52 feet long--costing a million to a million and a half, which also have multiple quality control problems. We as boat buyers enable these builders and allow them to turn out a sloppy product. I strongly suggest a survey on a new boat--let alone a "demo" boat. I also would encourage a national database of boat building problems; Boat US tries, but they don't catch but a fraction of the problems. Surveyors do, because they don't want to go on record with negative comments on a group of boats (save David Pascoe, whose writings should be reqired reading for all boat buyers).

Thanks to "The Hull Truth" for bringing out these problems in the open!

Hey Luhrs41. If you see Yarborough with sandpaper in his hand tell him to pound sand. He took sand paper to the hull of my Polar to try to get stains out of the gel coat. The stains came out all right... along with a layer of already too thin gel coat!

As a side note: Do you all remember the "Thrill of victory and the agony of defeat ABC Wide World of Sports television ads during the late 70's and 80's? Well the guy that does the summersaults in the hydrofoil is none other than Roger Yarborough. When he gets on your Luhrs and it starts healing to the side and steering its own course he'll be right at home!!!

Word is he has become a very large man -- If he sits on the port side the entire boat might just flip over. I am sure they will have some good BS excuse for Rick. They will want to take the boat back for some more experiments. They will be getting no more rides on my boat. If they want to ride in hull # 119 it will be after they purchase the POS from me.

LUHRS HAS A NEW DEALER ---- OBVIOUSLY THEY NEVER READ THT.......

Luhrs dealership changes hands

Boating Industry
Tuesday June 12, 2007

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – One of Luhrs Corp.’s top dealerships, Scituate Yacht Company of Hull, Mass., now has new owners, the boat builder reported in a statement today.

David and Rosa McShane have re-christened the dealership the New Scituate Yacht Company and have opened a new location in Green Harbor, Mass., according to Luhrs. The New Scituate Yacht Company location includes 185 slips, a ships store, fuel dock, pump-out station and a full service yard.

“Rosa and I are excited about the opportunity to represent Luhrs in five of the six New England states. Luhrs makes a great product that fits extremely well in our market niche and region,” said McShane, a former investment adviser.

John Ulanowski, the former Sciuate Yacht Company owner of 32 years, continues in a sales and consulting capacity.

“John is a wealth of knowledge and experience and will assist us through the ownership transition. It is our intention to retain the traditional values of the former dealership, while embracing many new initiatives to move the company to the next level of sales, service and marketing,” added McShane.

“We are looking forward to seeing the New Scituate Yacht Company expand, and to supporting the McShane’s fresh approach to the Northeast market. Luhrs is totally committed to supporting our new dealer in this market and their customers,” said David Taylor, Luhrs director of sales and marketing.

Silence. Maybe they did do a deal? I think they would have had to make him whole and take the boat back lock, stock and barrel to keep this quiet.
