Default BRP just discontinued all E-TECS

Today Brunswick announced that Mercury was going to be powering BRP's boat brands. Which begs the question: huh? The press release explains that BRP is killing E-TECs:

FOND DU LAC, Wisc. (May 27, 2020) -- Mercury Marine, a division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE:BC) and a world leader in marine propulsion systems, has entered into a strategic supply agreement with BRP to be the supplier of choice for BRP owned boat brands Alumacraft, Manitou, Quintrex & Stacer. BRP has made the decision to discontinue the production of E-TEC and E-TEC G2 engines effective immediately.

“This agreement brings us an incredible opportunity to further grow our brand in the marketplace and introduce our award-winning portfolio of outboard engines to new customers around the world,” said Chris Drees, Mercury Marine president. “We have enjoyed long standing relationships with Alumacraft, Manitou and Telwater and we look forward to continuing to work with them while providing class-leading outboard engines and exceptional service to all of their global customers.”

“We stay true and committed to our marine strategy, and we strongly believe that having two of the most innovative global marine companies to join forces, will not only be mutually beneficial to Mercury Marine and BRP, but also to the whole industry and to customers, " said Karim Donnez, Senior Vice President, Marine Group, IS&T and Global Transformation. “While COVID-19 has precipitated the discontinuation of the production of our outboard engines, we will proudly offer packaged Manitou, Alumacraft, Quintrex and Stacer boats with Mercury Marine going forward."

Mercury Marine will be the outboard supplier of choice for the Alumacraft and Manitou brands as well as Quintrex & Stacer in Australia.

“We are excited for the BRP dealers and consumers to experience our new engines – and with our recent capacity related investments we are well positioned for continued growth,” said Drees.

Boat packages for Alumacraft, Manitou, Quintrex & Stacer with Mercury outboards will be available in early June.

Etecs are built in Wisconsin. I really hope no fanboys of other brands dance on the grave today. A bunch of American men and women just lost their jobs from this.

Holy cow! Can't say we didn't see that coming. RIP ETEC.

I have an E-TEC and was thinking about repowering with another one, so I think this sucks. Mine is 11 years old and has been great.

Say WHAT?

No more EVINRUDE? Well crap. Seems like just yesterday I bought my first 3HP “Lightwin”.

NOTHING like the smell of 24/1 two-stroke exhaust...

A sad day when we lose an engine OEM that helped drive innovation and competition, not to mention one that was a major player to define the industry. I personally thought the G2 was lacking in several areas, but never imagined they would fold entirely. Ouch. This sucks.

Damn. Just damn.

Too stubborn to put a four stroke power plant on an Evinrude frame.

Better to buy motors from Mercury Marine. Good news that an American company will benefit from this.

Congrats to Mercury. Condolences to Evinrude.

Rumour has it that Yamaha is next in line to make a similar announcement.

Classic? Where are you?

It’s on the BRP website.

Reading between the lines it appears their outboard division was already struggling and the COVID-19 pandemic was the nail in the coffin.

Since I just got a new 175 gen 1 with a 10 yr. warranty I have to admit that I am mildly interested in this topic. Warranty info? Anyone?

Really hope this is a farce. I had my heart set on a 3cyl 150 for my rebuild next year.

"We will continue to supply customers and our dealer network service parts and will honour our manufacturer limited warranties, plus offer select programs to manage inventory. "

I can't imagine what this will look like in 10 years.
