Default 47 Buddy Davis

I am re painting my 89 47’ Buddy Davis. The hull side vents are brittle and somewhat rotten. Does anyone know of a cheaper, easier fix than having these re built by hand? Is there an aftermarket vent or any good ideas on what to do?

Thanks

This fella is in the middle of a resto on his Hatteras and is redoing the vents as well.

Try this place, I’ve purchased aftermarket vents from them.

If I was looking for replacement vents I would call one of the Carolina custom builders like Bayliss or Spencer I'll bet they could suggest something.

Back in the day they were built on a mold by a Guy named Mike Lohr at Davis. I know him well and can give you his number. Today they a route red out by the high end builder and layer up on modeling foam. Back in the day they were hand build. I’m building a set now, hundreds of hours of work.

Broadus Rose with Lookout Boat Window Frames makes fiberglass replacement parts. I've seen some of his vents, they are nice. His number is 252 723 2222.

That is correct. They aren’t far up the road from me.

I agree with 3D Printing. You can have a perfect, custom part thats incredibly strong and damn near paint ready. Easy to do something crazy custom if you want as well

if built in a mold how can they be rotting? did they have exposed wood in them?

They appear to be mahogany (maybe) plywood....it’s definitely some type of quality plywood but over 20 years they have deteriorated and I dont want to put new paint on without fixing them properly.

I like the 3D idea but have no experience with it. I am in Destin, FL and a quick google search doesn’t turn up much. Do you know if a 3D shop that has done something like this. I can probably ship the old one to someone for a template. Thanks

Default 89 Buddy Davis Side Hull Vents

So I took a lot of the advice from my original post. I contacted a lot of the guys in and around North Carolina where the Buddy Davis was built originally. Had no luck finding replacement vents so I ended up working with a local fiberglass guy and we rebuilt them.
I can’t seem to post the pictures because I guess I am a new user.
What do I need to do so I can post some of my before and after pictures?. The boat is looking great.

Default 47 Buddy Davis

Ok thanks.....I learned a lot by calling and talking to some of these guys that were suggested.....Buddy Davis sounds like a character......I have enjoyed working on this 47’ it’s almost like a work of art with the new paint and clear coat.
