Default 22í Offshore Bay Rebuild

Well, the busiest part of my work year is about to start and my wife and I are are expecting our first child to be born in a couple weeks, so I figured now was the perfect time to run out and buy a project boat.

About me...Iíve been basically addicted to this website for the past couple years, plotting and planning this project. I grew up on the east coast of Florida on and around boats. Boating/fishing centered family but nobody did much of their own work on Ďem, other than my grandfather messing with the diesels in his sportfish when theyíd break down in the Bahamas. Live on Tampa Bay now, getting used to this gulf side and the fishery. Iíve done a good bit of woodwork, building tables, bars, shelving, stuff like that. But no glass. Iím a total noob and will undoubtedly screw some most of this shit up.

This is a 22í Offshore Yachts bay boat. Built in Clearwater, FL...similar to the Aquasport 22s, with less turn up at the bow and a bit more flare forward. I personally love the lines and it fit my non-negotiable parameters of: 3-piece construction, some semblance of deadrise/mod-V (wasnít interested in flatback), no major impact/hull damage. Was basically looking for these and 222s, with my preference for these due to the bow design in spite of the crappier factory fit/finish.

Iím measuring this project in years, not months/weeks, so this will be a very (very) slow developing thread w/ long gaps between updates/progress. Yes I know this will be expensive, stupid, Iím a masochist/idiot, should just go buy a sea hunt, blah blah blah. Thanks in advance to all the THT party poopers for your concern.

Iíve always loved Seacrafts, Alburys, and the typical southeast FL CCís, and have gained appreciation for the Aquasports, Dorados, Shaffers, etc since moving over here. This OSY22 doesnít have near the build quality of the aforementioned boats, and want to build some of that quality in to my work here.

Read most CC rebuild threads on here from the past 10 years or so, and a few elsewhere. To guys like Harvest Time, Double Tyme, DirtwheelsFL, Ole Parker, etc/countless others thanks for documenting your work. Really gives us mere mortals something to strive for.

Ran over to Melbourne area to pick the boat up. Trailer is small but had work done to it recently, so everything save for the tires was in decent shape for the trip across state (in the rain, of course). Slapped some new tires on it.

Bought it knowing it had a soft deck and fuel tank issues, PO suggested it could be run temporarily but my plan was rebuild all along.








Tucked away at storage yard after 5 hour rain soaked ordeal.

Tank was definitely leaky, or at least I thought (more on that later). Significant amount of water in bilge and I was concerned it was highly tainted w/ fuel, so let it sit collected in bilge overnight and tried my best to remove fuel w/ pump and bilge sheets before draining water.





Tough to see, but thereís a bobber floating up ahead of the gas tank here, basically under the console. A LOT of water I towed across state.

Got the liquid ordeal settled and started stripping hardware. A bunch of stuff was already stripped but everything original and some bad ďupgradesĒ was in the cap.

Much better w/ the bow rail off




Rotting core. Not a single thing (seriously, not one) that I uninstalled from the cap had even the slightest hint of sealant on it. Wood chunks/dust falling out of every hole.



Water POURED out of this bow rail stanchion when I backed the screws out. I think thatís bad.






Donít know what some of this 1/2 rate junk hardware was made out of, but it was literally crumbling to bits.

Removed deck piece covering tank and removed tank. Tank has no inspection/mfg plate but appears newer? Than 32 years old (boat is a 1987). Donít see any obvious holes but definitely fuel trapped under tank. Oil sheets soaked it right up.


Cover/deck off revealing wood rot carnage





These 2x4 blocks/chunks and 1x strips were all that was holding the tank in place. No foam, bolts, etc. It was basically loose in there. The wood is standard pine, not sealed in any way, drilled straight in to the stringers w/ decking screws. All this wood was basically disintegrating when I touched it. Definitely a previous ownersí improvisation.



Tank lifted out w/ zero effort. Loose in its compartment.



Oil sheets soaked gasoline right up. Rubber strips were only support tank had underneath, no foam.

And that’s basically where I’m at now. Deck starts coming up next. Need to sell t-top and console as they’re not a great fit for me and I want a more vertical stand-up console.

Plan is to fill in transom and go with a bracket. Porta brackets are popular here but I’m more used to a swim platform/bracket and think I’ll go that way. As much of this build as possible will be used/salvage/surplus store stuff to keep costs down.

Also pulling my hair out deciding on core material/etc. I’m relatively convinced I don’t want to put wood in her, but I KNOW I don’t want to drop 2-3k on coosa, either. Want to look in to gatorboard and whatever that stuff was harvest time put in his transom. Need to go to FGCI and talk to someone in person, clear my head up on some of that stuff. Dizzying array of choices.

Beautiful boat nice lines. Welcome to the world of boat rehab, keep us up to date on your progress. Looks like you have quite a bit of work ahead of you, but itís going to be a blast. Chances are this will not be last project you take on, it gets into your blood.

This made me laugh, I have the EXACT same set of circumstances, except our kid isn't due until March. Congrats on the project and the new addition to come soon!

Nice project and looks like a great boat for Tampa Bay. Arjay is something a bit cheaper than Coosa that they sell at FGCI that the guys there seem to have good things to say about.

Thanks for the tip on arjay, I’m aware of pourable transoms but honestly hadn’t really thought or considered it for this project yet, something I will look in to.

The I3 etec is definitely on my short list for power if I go new. Will likely have to finance a new motor but I’m open to it at this point. I haven’t dug too deep yet as I’m pretty far off, but considering power/weight ratio I will likely end up with something in the 150 range, Zuk 140 or etec 150 seem to be the top candidates. Once you get to 200hp seems weight pushes over the 500lb range which I think I want to avoid on this hull.

Very much will require reliable power and unlikely to be satisfied with an older/non etec 2 stroke. No sense in going through all the work just for the outboard to be a headache.

I am loving that you are doing some heavy lifting for me to help me get my boat going. I hope to be right behind you.

I am going to do my transom with Arjay and I need to figure out what to do my deck with. I have a few friends in the business and all have told me to use Arjay.

Rock on! I am just over the bridge from you, BTW.

At least you saved weeks of backbreaking work not carving a POS tank out of water-logged foam..! Good luck with the project, and the baby!

Planning on cutting out part of the deck tomorrow so I wanted to give some of my cutting tools a test run on the starboard rear box. Cutting this stuff is no joke and took more effort than I thought, even with a lot of delamination/rotten wood.

Used a carbide 1/2 moon on the oscillating tool which seemed way over matched/didn’t do much. The sawzall did better w/ a diamond grit blade but still took some muscle to chew through. Do any of you guys just use regular wood saw blades on your sawzall’s at this stage? Seems I needed more “bite”/teeth to get thru the wood core portion.

Also got my first hour in a tyvek suit today. It was like 68* and beautiful today here and holy shit...I can’t imagine putting that thing on in August. I hope my skin can handle the dust cuz I really don’t want to wear one of those things in the summer.






Also removed some of the remaining hardware/junk from the outside transom. Pulled the bottom screw off the deck drain cover and got a nice steady stream of water pissing out the hole for a couple minutes. Nice getting confirmation that...yeah...the transom is pretty shot.




Other next thing to do is get the boat up on blocks. I have no idea what I’m doing there outside of watching a couple YouTube videos...seen the one with the guy blocking the boat w/ a big keel up in the northeast. Bought a bunch of cinder blocks and a heavy 6x4 beam for wood blocks. Any tips or pointers there would be appreciated.

the two rebuilds ive done have stayed on the trailer for what its worth, dont get yourself too worked up about that just yet.

get the floor out, get everything cleaned up, check your stringers out, if theyre toast you can work one or two at a time and avoid needing to block it, in my case I need to be mobile from where I park the boat on my property and where I work on it so..alot of the worry about the "hull losing its shape" or "twisting" etc, happens more when all of the stringers are out and the boat has no "structural support"

Default Works for me

Iíve found using saws all wood with nails blades do best for dimo work, it allows you to be able to bend and flex the blade.


Also a good roofing shovel comes in handy as does a full face respirator.
Keep up the hard work and keep us up to date.

I rebuilt one of these about 14 years ago and am still kicking myself for selling it. It is hands down the shallowest (if proped correctly) driest best riding 22ft boat I have ever been on.
