Man, that's too bad. Glad nobody was injured. Touareg is great. A slick ramp is scary, because once that rig starts sliding, there's not much that can be done. I understand this was more a mechanical issue.

That little article seemed like puffery. If I had to "save wear and tear on" my transmission with a parking brake, I should have a more robust transmission, I think. I've been advised to downshift when going down long, mountain passes, to save wear on the brakes. Seems like I should save wear and tear on my car in general by walking everywhere!

Default Always CHOCK your Vehicle

I've seen this happen so often, I always chock my vehicle prior to launching and recovery. Especially on slippery ramps to help stop the truck if the tires were to spin or slide.

I have the same model as OP (diesel V6 Executive). The Touareg is made in Europe, where they don't believe in weight distribution hitches. So they over-designed the hitch to compensate. VW made a commercial with the previous gen model towing a 747 to highlight its towing capability. It's a beast of a towing machine. Easily pulls my boat which is right at the 7700 lb tow limit (it only travels about a mile between storage, the gas station, and the boat launch, though I take it on the freeway once a year to the service yard). They got rid of the 4WD low option in 2011, but they gave it an extremely low 1st gear in its 8 speed automatic. I was worried about it at first, but it pulls my boat up the ramp at 1600 RPM in 1st gear. There are silly YouTube videos of trucks doing a tug of war via their tow hitches, and the Touareg usually wins.

The weight of the load isn't a problem - someone on the Touareg forums had a look at its towbar assembly and said it's more robustly built than ones he's seen on 3/4 ton pickups. Its main weakness when towing is lack of wheelbase. In high crosswinds, you can feel the trailer trying to push the car around. The other thing you have to watch out for is the car's axle loads when you have a heavy trailer attached. After adding the max tongue weight, there's only enough GVWR left for like one passenger. (Speaking of which, there was some controversy with the label on the hitch stating the max tongue weight as 600 lbs in North America, vs 771 lbs (10% tow weight) in Europe. There's been a lot of debate over this, but VW will give you a sticker to cover up 600 with a 770 if you can find someone at VW who knows about the issue.)

All Exec models came with the tow hitch standard, so it's the factory hitch rated for the full 7716 lbs (3500 kg). Most aftermarket hitches are rated for less. Thanks for your insight on my car, the turbo on it really kicks it up when taking off. I should get around 700 miles on a tank of gas too.

Been trailering for decades and never get the tow vehicles rear tires in the water.
Not on purpose .
Thats a good way to ruin your vehicle with salt or water into the axle.
I realize not everyone has AWD or a 4x4 to tow with but itís much safer when on a green ramp at low tide.
I have a set sequence when pulling out...
foot on brake, shift to drive, foot to gas adding a little then release the e-brake and power up.
Two years back I mixed it up and almost paid dearly for it. Foot on brake, release e-brake (mistake) then as I shifted through reverse the front brake line blew! I started rolling back with no brakes so I dropped it quick into drive and with a chirp it climbed out. I doubt hitting the e-brake would have stopped it on the green stuff in the water and 4wd saved me.
Thinking now I have to agree that a chocked wheel would have helped too. A block of wood behind with a line attached to the hitch can be left in place and will automatically drag behind you as you climb the ramp.
Also, I recently bought a new trailer and it came with a flat ď5Ē pin connector .
I have both a 4 pin and 7 pin connection on my vehicle so I bought a 7 to 5 pin adaptor to make it work. The 5th wire is connected to the reverse lamps which triggers a solenoid in the hydraulic brakes preventing them from engaging when you backup. You can still relocate the pin but the solenoid just skips a step making it a little easier.
On LED lamps, I have a bunch of trailers, some with LED lamps and some not. I also have new and old tow vehicles. LED lamps donít make any difference to the tow vehicle.
Either incandescent or LED they both work on 12v and thatís all the system knows.

Curious, did you have eyes on the vehicle while you were getting the boat? Any video of the area? You're sure no one did something malicious?

I launch my 17 ft boat by myself without leaving my suv. Tie a strong line from the trailer to the boat’s eye. Unhitch all straps, then back down to the water. When sufficiently deep, hit the brakes hard; boat slides off the trailer and is stopped by the rope. Slowly drive up, park, lock (and chock!) suv, then pull the boat to the bank by the rope,

That's how I unload my pontoon but haven't used chocs. I only gently move the boat in until it gently floats off the trailer though.
