Older Fords never had a good Park detent for the Shifter. Many years ago they had a Recall on some for slipping out of Park. Parking Brakes don't hold as well backwards either.Especially if it's the Drum in Hat Rotors. Park Brake Shoes are small as crap! Sorry for Your loss..

Use a wheel chock on the driver front wheel and add a rope to it. You can pull it up and out of the way once you get the vehicle going.
In your Touareg is it the switch that says "on road" and "off road" (no 4HI?). |

Was there any determination as to what caused the fire?
I haven't been using e brake or chocks. Just put it in park. Guess I have been really lucky........I think I will start with chocks |
My e brake doesn’t know the difference between forward and backwards. Holds the truck in place on an incline with the boat attached. |

Say what?
Now try try driving forward. The brake shoes work like a cam and the forward rotation helps apply them. |

Someone had posted awhile back on this topic (I think it was here on THT) that they have a chock for each front tire on a line with a loop that they throw over each side mirror. As they drive forward up the ramp, the chock is dragged along until finding a place to stop. I think that would work well.

Everyone out, windows down, wheel chock. Also don’t tow with cars. |

How can you put a 4x4 behind rear tire when it's down maybe almost or even in the water?
Now that I have an automatic I guess I've put trust in the "P" and parking brake. Locking it into 4x4 I've done now on steep ramps and after reading this I'll have to make sure to do that more frequently. |
I was told that if you saw how small the Park detent is in the transmission, you would never leave it just in Park on any kind of slope
|
I can't tell - what kind of vehicle was it that sunk? Sorry for your loss but you seems to have the right mindset.

Looks like an Explorer, unfortunately you have to keep your parking brake inspected and serviced I guess, we all take it for granted. Not OPs fault as it could happen to anyone. The Touareg can’t really tow 7,800 pounds I’d guess, sounds like a marketing grab like the unachievable half ton max ratings. That’s Expedition and Suburban territory. Ford tried rating the Explorer there too, was never up to the task. The full sizes have a lot more wheelbase, engine, and payload than these to tow that weight safer. Although the Touareg diesel has a lot of torque, a lot more promising than the gas V6. Looks like a nice car inside. |

I always roll the windows down. In case one of the kids is in for whatever reason so they can swim out if it ever happened. I always make them get out and wait on the dock/beach, but just in case. If the ramp is steep I also put it in 4HI so park in the trans is connected to the front diff.

Problem though with this is sometimes the parking brake gets stuck and you can't release it.
|
I always back in fairly close to the dock and religiously cut the wheels hard over in the event the e-brake on my truck ever fails. I carry a chock but only use it when the ramp is slick. Disclaimer: I also have a roller trailer so my truck wheels are seldom within 5 or 6 feet of the water.
|
You just lost a vehicle because the parking break failed and you're concerned about using a chock because someone might judge you for it..........i guess you enjoy testing out your vehicles floatation
|
It’s not an E brake, it’s a parking brake. It works forward or reverse. Use it.
To efficiently use a chock under the front wheel, attach a cord to it and close you door on the cord so when you drive up the ramp, it just drags the chock along. Just be sure there is not enough cord for the chock to reach the real wheel. |
