I hear ya. Unfortunately the THT Concern Troll herd has been stampeeding and trampelling any member who deviated from their preferred Normalcy Bias outcome. Valuable time and opportunity to pursue other possiblities which SAR protocol precludes at this stage have been lost. As one member PM-d me "I'd hate to have them searching for me".

One thing that stands out from the wife's first interview is she texted her husband and it was disconcerting to her he did not respond. To me this indicates in the past she was able to text them on the reef. Coupled with the ping track ending before the reef may indicate an event occurred prior to the reef. However, on prior trips she may have been texting to a different phone such as the FIL's. My Motorola flip phone could get signal to 18 miles and voice/text from 16. About twice the distance of an iPhone 7+. I'm sure SAR considered all this but it'd have been nice to be able to discuss possibilities and COAs not available to SAR per their protocol.

I can assure you this is not possible. I fish this reef and there is no reception.

2 quick pan pan's - the first reported (as stated before) the sighting of an orange life jacket in the water - coordinates posted earlier - i missed em - they read too fast.

2nd was report of a distress call from a boat - again too fast for me to catch the name of the damn boat - anyone else listening? Did you guys hear it? I just started listening - sorry if this is a repeat from earlier.

You ought to start a thread about SAR’s protocol - we will be right over to hear all you have to say. Promise.

"long time lurkers and have joined to provide well wishes to the OP and his family."

OP's phone number is in post #1. Why don't you call him and offer your support and well wishes directly instead of spamming your virtue signals at anyone who doesn't meet your definition of providing "useful information"? The last thing needed on this thread is another virtue signalling Concern Troll.

She also stated that the messages showed "not delivered".. Quote from news story:

"It was supposed to be a fairly short day on the water," she said. "I gave them until 6 p.m. maybe because the fishing was great. But 6 o'clock, I didn't hear and I still could see that he didn't read my messages – they hadn't even been delivered yet … at 8 p.m. we called the Coast Guard."

Smart phone or flip phone? I made voice calls 18 miles offshore with a Motorola RAZR3. My iPhone can't make calls beyond 8. But yeah, I agree. He probably has a smart phone so went beyond range as they neared the reef. The wife's consternation is puzzling tho. Like she expected to be able to text him at the reef.

This thread is to provide information about the situation but to also provide therapy for those of us that live this lifestyle and know this can happen to any of us and because we care so very much each time this happens. To put it nicely leave it to the Mods to Mod.

i think it is interesting that the voices of so many experienced captains who know these areas are being stamped out because its not a simple, "thoughts and prayers" post.

yes, the CG is extraordinarily qualified but that does not mean that others should be silenced. some are trying to provide constructive discussion on possible scenarios and are being ridiculed.

i dont understand why. very sad.

Heard something about them having someone in route. Is that to the life jacket or to the other distress call earlier?

Simply put, SAR doesn't come here for advice, for good reason. If you have real information you should call the CG.

Unlike scuppers you’ve provided nothing but ridicule this entire time to this thread. I actually have thought about his scenario posts and have even moved around my ditch bag and tied my type I life jacket to my leaning post so I can unclip in an instant. There are many of us who go offshore and are not the most experienced bunch and as sad as this event is and tragic it is, this can be a learning experience for many of us.

simply put, SAR has failed. the only hope left for these men are private search parties, which will likely in part be organized here. wouldn't you be looking for creative ideas at this point?

I admit I didn't read every post so maybe it's already been asked, did this boat have auto pilot ?
