Default Oil in gear case has water leaving on Thursday trip

hi.

Just checking things and found Carmel colored oil in gear case.

Was not in there end of last season.

Was not puking out of fill hole when checked first.

Does not drip while parked.

I have extra lower units but not fully tested or checked out or test run.

Leaving on thursday for 1800 mile round trip boating camping trip.

Would you just change the oil and deal with it when I get back?

or swap another lower unit that you have not run on the water before a long trip?

Seen worse... What are your boating plans on vacation? 50 miles offshore? If getting stranded is an inconvenience rather than life threatening, I'd change it several times while on vacation and deal with it when I returned. I'm a crazy person but would find a way to bring a spare lower with me.

Fill with clean, check after some running by just removing lower drain to see if water intruded. Since you have a spare, bring it along.

Just change and enjoy vacation. That is no big issue.

Default Fox river chain of lakes

Northern central us in land lakes.

Ending at at fox river chain of lakes north of Chicago

you got me thinking about taking extra lower unit.

But I think I will be fine just changing oil and dealing with reseal later

It has been working for the season so far and that is not a lot of water.

I would refill it with fresh gearlube, replace the o ring on the fill and vent and use the boat.

It will be fine. How many hours did it take to get that much water in it?

Default Not sure on motor hours.

I don’t really know on hours.

I trailer most of the time. Was in water for a week at fourth. 3-4 days out before that.

Maybe 20 hours since I changed it.

What brand and model motor?

We need to flog them for their lack of quality.

Watch for oil pushing out and leaving a oil slick, if so probably best to stop.
