Default Thoughts on old tach/new motor issue

I just re-powered my '04 Maycraft 1900 which had a 135 Opti and all original analog gauges(Merc) including tach with a new 150 4 stroke Merc . I love the motor but am having issues with erratic tach readings. It will read as high as 7000 after jumping around and then will eventually settle down to what appear to be reasonable/accurate numbers. It does not do this all the time. Does anyone know if there is a tech issue with new motor versus old gauge? Will go back to dealer for 20 hour check but that will be awhile. Break in requires different times at different rpm's so it is a little bit of an issue.

Spend a little more money and get new Mercury tach to go with that new motor!

Get Mercury Vessel View and use your phone or an old device. I recently put on the same motor and have analog gauges. My analog RPM and one on Vessel View are reading identical.
