Default Is my issue a throttle cable or something else? (Update, needing some assistance)

Ran into an issue out on the water this weekend. Fortunately, we were with some friends and they were able to tow us in.

We were cruising to our final stop for the day and I slowed down then put the boat in reverse just a bit to stop forward momentum to drop my power pole. Well when I went to put it in reverse out of no where the throttle was locked out, I couldnít get it to do anything it was frozen. I couldnít get it in reverse, So then I tried to put it in gear to go forward and same thing itís locked, no play what so ever. I tried to force it slightly then lost all tension. The boat would rev up, but would not go in gear.

Im assuming I busted a throttle cable. Should I be worried about anything else? I was worried about something locking up on the motor side that wouldnít allow it to go into gear. I plan to pull the cables in the morning and see whatís going on. What are somethings I should be looking for or testing?

This is 2005 Yamaha VMax HPDI 225 (vz225tlrd).

Update

Pulled the throttle control box and disconnected the cables from the motor and the control box. The cables are working as they should. However, i could not manually put the motor in gear at the motor itself. So, i decided to pull the drain plugs on the lower unit. I found dark burnt oil and very fine metal on the plug. Not a ton of metal just a very fine layer over the plug, i've been told this is normal at times? But i do know that the oil was pretty dark and smelled burnt. This oil only has about 30-40 hours on it.

Now i'm lost, i'm not sure how to tell if the lower unit is bad or what? Do i need to just buy a new throttle control box, new water pump kit, and throw it all back together and see what happens?

If you can't twist the shift rod at the engine to put the gear case into fwd or reverse, then you have some repairs to do. Your gear oil has shavings and smells of burnt oil.

Whelp, figured out what the problem was. A bolt came loose from somewhere and feel down into the bottom of the cowling and made its way down into shift linkage. That bolt wouldnít allow anything to move in there. Pulled the bolt out with a magnet and everything is back to normal. That damn bolt had me shutdown all weekend. Iím going to go ahead and change out the water pump and lower unit oil since I have it all broken down. Not sure why the oil seemed pretty burnt.

Scratch that figuring everything out part. Back to square one. The cables arenít the issue, they work fine when not connected on the motor end. Also, the lower end is fine. I can shift it manually in neutral, forward, and reverse. However when trying to mount the lower unit back on, the only way we can get the unit on is by having it in gear. Then when the cables are stuck I canít put it into gear or put it in reverse. I have dropped the lower unit several times and tried different things. Every time I end up not being able to put the boat in gear.

What else should I be looking at? I know itís not the cables, binnacle, or the lower end.

There is a procedure to drop the lower and easily get it back together. You have to start with the shifter in the correct position or you end up where you are now.Google up some youtube video of dropping the lower on your motor. There are different procedures for different motors.Get a manual.
