Default Yam F350 - Suz DF350: final direct comparison.

...all right, had the 4'' jack plate installed, did some test runs and raised the engine further than the shop did; it is now in excess of 3 holes above the ventilation-plate-level-with-keel baseline, which was the mounting height of the Yamaha. I think it is quite representative now, as the amount of maneuver slippage is just about he same for both engines. Back when I first found out I had to change to Suzuki from Yamaha, I decided that I would be satisfied if I got the Suzuki to perform within 2 knots of the Yamaha, and I happy to say that is now the case. So:

WOT
F350 _ 51 knots _ 5600 rpm _ 125 ltr / nm
DF350 _ 49 knots _ 5900-6000 rpm _ 115-120 ltr / nm

30 knots
F350 _ 3500-3600 rpm _ 1,40-1,45 ltr / nm
DF350 _ 3800 rpm _ 1,30 ltr / nm

5 knots
F350 _ 1000 rpm _ 1,15 ltr / nm
DF350 _ 900 rpm _ 0,75 ltr / nm

NOTE: I never ran the Yamaha higher on the transom than having the ventilation plate level with the keel, but I don't think it would have liked being much higher, based on when it would start to lose grip during maneuvering. The Suzuki certainly likes to be higher; I recon the plate is 7-8 cm above the keel now (by the way, love that I can adjust the height fairly easily myself whilst the boat is on the water - good design Bob). I no longer have the insane turning grip from before, but it's a cruiser, not a jet ski. Since I'm touching 6000 rpm now, I'm considering going back to the 25 pitch props (Changed to 24 before mounting the plate; gained 150ish RPMs, no speed), simply for the better fuel economy. I bet I'd hit 30 knots at more or less the same RPMs as with the Yamaha now.

SO, in summation, F350 vs DF350, single engine, same hull: One will lose 4% top speed, simply because of the added drag (and lets not forget; smaller engine, less torque), but gain better fuel economy - 10ish % at cruise, not much at WOT, as much as 1/3 at trolling speed. The boat now also reverses like a car, and turns as one at slow speeds. The Suzuki planes the boat earlier, even with the elevated mounting height. thus allowing effective cruise at lower speeds, with better economy. There was little point in running the boat lower than 28 knots with the Yamaha; now I can cruise along at 24-25 kt. The Yamaha sounds better - that angry, but so very refined growl, but I find the Suzuki to be REALLY quiet below 3500 RPM, and sounding kinda awesome when you go beyond 5000.

If I was feeling naughty I would market the Suzuki as the big outboard for women; a bit slower, and easier to park (harr, harr). As mentioned I'm happy with it now, as I'm within two knots of the Yamaha.

PS: I have an inquiry about the engine noise: I'm noticing a quite distinct whistling noise when I go past 4000ish RPMs. Noise of the airflow over / through the grills on the engine cover?

good chance you will gain some RPMs with little more use and the 25p props will get you almost the same top end speed as the Yamaha. Your results are the same as everyone else when direct compared to the F350. The Suzuki planes boats faster, keeps boat on plane at lower speeds, has faster cruise speeds with better MPG all while doing the same top end speed.

Sorry if I missed this from your previous post, but which version of the F350 are your stats from, A, B, or C?

Nice comparison! I've also got the whistle with the 350. Even thought for a moment I missed something and it is indeed a super or turbocharged engine, which it obviously is not. I also think it has something to do with airflow.

EVERY time I get fuel, "I can't push you off until your motors are running". My response, "My zukes are running, sir".......jaw drop.

Thanks for the final update on this. I am glad you are getting better performance out of the DF350 than you had seen earlier.

Filmed a speed run today - mobile phone, and minding traffic, so not good camera work

There's a speed run movie at the same site / user with the Yamaha:

My apologies if you’ve already answered this, but what made you repower with the zuke over another F350?

Water intrusion in the exhaust, no idea from how deep in. Decided to get new engine instead of spending boatloads (no pun intended) on possible repairs, and F350s are impossible to get hold of, at least in Europe.

...oh by the way - never apologize for something like that, at least not to me; I detest people who take the time to point out that something has been asked about or talked about at some point before - this is a discussion forum, not a scientific journal. People like that need to spend more time wandering around on the freeway searching the sky for aliens...
