Up into the 1950's probably 95% of all marine engines were “flywheel forward” engines. This allows the engine to sit lower in the boat and at a shallower shaft angle, (though it is not as good from a stress perspective). Chris Craft continued using this flywheel forward configuration when it started converting the SBC’s for marine use in the 1950’s, and maintained that setup for about 20 years.

This engine was pretty much a frankinengine based on the Chris Craft ‘185’.
