the higher number is probably due to sportmaster gearcases...they aint cheap. But a 25-30" 450R around $50k was my guess. KAG!!!!!

The "come at me bro" thing on Yamaha's FB page is a bit infantile. Otherwise would have been an okay response.

I think the reasonably priced 500hp mark will be closer to a breakthrough where the many twin 250hp boats out there can go single.
I am not sure if you are serious.

It has the highest power to weight ratio of any outboard on the market right now.

It also has 40% more torque than the std v8 and that thing is torquey

What's your answer to this engine?

It has 40% more torque than the 400r, which is a 2.6l vrod, not the 4.6l V8.. that's how I read the article.. I'm not discounting the power of this engine, just don't see it as game changing. Game changing to me was 7 marine years ago and the F425 last year as those were engines that filled a needed niche.. The 450r was release into a segment that exists with 7 and the f425, and while it may outperform it and be a better option, I feel it's a stretch to call it game changing, especially at the price I'm hearing. That's all. I'm a merc fan as my 08 250 opti is one of the best and favorite engines I've owned!

Yamaha changed the game For sure. Now boats need 17 bilge pumps before they leave the factory

I want one for my Bluewave 2800!!! Wonder how much my Suzuki 350 is worth....

Did anyone catch this outboard has 450 at the prop. I think most outboards are rated at the crank. I have no idea what they loose through the lower unit, but it’s like getting rear wheel hp numbers for you car from the factory. So if this engine has 450 at the prop and loses only 5% through the driveline (cars lose 13-20%) that puts this outboard at nearly 475 hp. I am almost certain other brands do not quote prop hp numbers.

I believe all outboard are rated at the prop since the 80's.

that pic makes me laugh each time. Backing down in dirty water like they have a grander on.

cool new Merc, but would be more impressed if they started shipping motors they already make.

I very well may be wrong, but I have never read any new outboard release where they stressed “prop hp” so many times. I think it was mentioned 4-6 times. I was assuming that was a new thing.

450hp at 700lbs is impressive.

You can have quad 450s with less weight than triple 425 Yamahas.

it's called advertising, best to say how fabulous something is, even if it's the same as everyone else, they are all rated at the prop, but these guys are telling you it is, and it worked, it got you!

I have watched every high hp outboard unveiling for the last 10-12 years and never seen so much mention of prop hp.

Either way i was sold sold with 450 hp, 3 year warranty, 89 octane and shipping now. Just have to see how much I am going to lose selling my new Suzuki 350 and get on of these on my Bluewave 28.
