Default What's your dumba$$ count for Memorial Day Weekend?

Crazy out there this weekend - so many people! I was counting up dumba$$es, what's your tally? I'll start the bidding at:
.
  • A sporty cutting left to right across my bows in broad daylight: clearly the stand-on vessel is the most expensive one.
  • One flats boat tearing down the channel in pitch black with nothing but an anchor light.
  • One boat in front of me in the dark in the no wake zone who decided to put on all their white lights and twerk at us - did wonders for my night vision. Then they stopped and started every time they got close to a navigation marker because presumably they had no idea what the round, spinny thing on the T-Top was for.
And I'm not going anywhere near the water toady....

Fishing with 3 kids on a point, slow trolling live baits at .4 mph with my I pilot. Red Neckerson with a ski boat full comes by at 30 mph within 15 yards of us. He had at least 200 more yards to work with. My son’s biggest from the trip.

Best to go to the ramp and set up there to watch the show.

I can’t count that high. Everyone with beer on board. Will that do?

I took my bay boat out on Saturday morning to try to get a couple more hours on it and see if I could get my trolling motor synced up with the remote, it was about 10:00 am, what a $hitshow!! Crab Island was packed, boats 3 deep going both ways in the harbor, one pontoon bow up pushing 15 knots in the no wake zone! Sunday, I took my wife, son, his girlfriend and our dogs on the pontoon. That wasn’t any better! Destin is full!!

Been on the water most of the weekend. Very busy, but dumbass count was remarkable low. Lots of new boats and obviously novice captains, but every one of them has been very cautious and reserved. At the busy raft up spot Saturday one was getting frustrated trying to set their anchor and even asked for help.

Default Amateur count fairly low

My experience was about the same as Autobaun70's. I went out early, 10:30ish and seemed to beat most of the crowd. Spent the day at Passage Key with a bunch of my neighbors. About a dozen or so boats in all. Didn't really see too many issues. The usual, going too fast in a no wake zone, and lots of boats that looked like they were maxed out on capacity. One boat in particular did stand out. It was a flat bottom fishing boat with 3 young guys on board. One at the helm and one on either side of the helm, standing up. No T Top, railing, or other support to hang on to. The were standing up with their hands at their sides. Just to prove that they could I guess. I was running about 26knts and they passed me pretty handily. Jumping wakes etc. I kept waiting for one of them to fall out. Never did. We covered about 30 miles from Bradenton to Passage Key and back and really didn't have any issues. It's all we could hope for.

I was told there is a two drink minimum to even launch your boat this weekend. Three if it’s a Jetski.
yelling at everyone around you is required as well apparently
you must Pass all other boats within 6 feet I guess. It must be important to look at them and see what they’re doing as you go by close enough to hand them a beer?

and that was my observation when I worked Saturday. Fortunately, I was off yesterday and today. Watching from afar and listening on the VHF is entertaining today.

stayed home, avoided all of the wrecks and stupidity. Last time I was out on a holiday I had to rescue someone stranded on a shoal and it ended up costing me way more than my time.

I count the 75 inches of rain we got that swamped all the boat ramps! Also it's about $20 for a guy to pick you up and take you to the marina since it floats but the parking lot is under 8 ft of water

I’m never a fan of going out on holiday weekends but my wife loves it as all our friends are out. This was the first time we didn’t have to mess with a ramp so I agreed to give it a go. My main request was to beat the crowd so it would be easy to anchor. We dropped the boat in the water around 930am ran 10 mins to the sandbar got anchored up and just hung out then around 330pm ran back home and was back in the house by 4pm or so. Really nice weekend and since it’s such a short ride didn’t encounter anything crazy....thank goodness.

The local evening news said there was 400 boats at Peanut Island in West Palm Beach today. A normal busy weekend is about 20 boats.

Lots of idiots on crab island in Destin Florida. I just drove by shaking my head on the way to and from fishing.

Saw a pontoon hit the dock at a solid 5 knots, knocking 3 people standing on the bow into the water.

1 guy drug his skeg the enire length of the ramp despite everyone yelling for him to stop.

Watched a boat towing a wakeboarder at speed through a no wake zone drunk. I’m assuming he was drunk since fwc put the bracelets on him and start towing his boat.

Seem another guy doing sobriety tests with his boat in tow, the look on his girls face told the outcome.

Didnt see it happen but saw sherrifs investigating a blow boat mast hitting a bridge & breaking in 1/2.

Watched teenaged kids running on plane 15’ from a pile of people at a sandbar. Police boat ran aground when they went to stop them so the outcome is unknown to me, i was leaving at the time.

Forgot the guy jerking his boat up the ramp & popping his winch strap, then backing down & hooking up his safety chain & jerking it so hard that it snapped too.
Pulled the boat out loose & rigged up some dock lines to try to hold the boat on the trailer.

Another guy was 1 hour 20 mins launching, thought there would be some drama involved but it was uneventful.

Went fishing alone. Had two great experiances at the ramp today.

Out of the blue i had competent help putting it in and pulling it out. Not a bad day at all.
