This is the site I use for part number checking:

http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx..._id=0&siteid=1

Obviously select Johnson from the top drop down menu, then your year and HP.

I don't see your model# on the list. Nothing ending in "F".

STIM you're the man! I have one other question, What does the F stand for at the end of the model #? I have read to run away from the Fitch engines like the plague. I wanna make sure this engine is vaccinated!

SweetD you the dude! Yes that is my question now what does the F stand for? I have read that the Fitch engines are detrimental to ones health and I want to make sure this engine is not one of those! Thanks again!

Your model number doesn’t get a hit. Is this something you think or a picture of the bracket tag.?

The F would be the suffix letter. I believe the V model was a later production white engine as they were only available as charcoal P model in the beginning of the 2001 model year and then the white ones came out. The F may also be the model that BRP uncrated and relabeled with the new epa tags when they took over back in early 2001.

Dacman, No this number J90VLSIF is the legit model # of the engine, not the bracket tag. I found the model in the pdf you referred me to. I still need to know how I can tell if it is a Ficht engine.

A 2001 Johnson would be a carb'd engine. I had an '01 115 (same block), a carb'd motor and pretty much indestructible. It had a BRP label put on over the original OMC one.

there is two parts to this, first is, have a look at see if it has carbs (it will) so, not a FICHT, second, even if it was, the V4 FICHTS performed as designed right from the start, they did not suffer from inherent issues like the bigger HP did, they do however suffer from the name on resale.

What’s the model on the bracket tag is what I meant .
Stim’s link is basically the same engine that I have . 23 years still running.
Only thing I’ve put on it is a new starter and solenoid, a new voltage regulator , plugs and wires. Water pumps and maintenance basically.
knock on wood!
Has a decent cold starting system.

Cant Fish 4 Sh..,

It is not a FICHT design. Johnson only offered FICHT in 1997 and 1998.

Order your parts using J90VLSIC elec start, TNT, 20 in shaft, wht 2001 . The owners of Johnson and Evinrude at that time, George Soros' company, put them in bankruptcy in Dec. of 2000. Your motor may have been one of the last ones produced by the former OMC and not recorded in a parts list. That letter F is only a production line code and likely has nothing to do with the parts that you will be buying.

Ok, thanks to all for the help! I have a new issue, I am looking at a 2004 Johnson 90hp what is the difference between the ocean pros and the non-ocean pro? Is there anything to watch out for when using it in saltwater? Thank you guys!

Is it a two stroke or four stroke? They made both in 2004 I'm pretty sure. The fours stroke was a joint venture with Suzuki.

Nothing to worry about in the salt other than everything corrodes more quickly, so you have to do what you can to combat corrosion. Which means vigilance with the maintenance. But nothing difficult.

I'm not sure what the Ocean Pro model offered that the non-OP didn't.

The Ocean Pros and Ocean Runners had more SS components, like the steering arm and a few others iirc to better withstand the saltwater environment. I had a '95 (90 hp)and an '01(115) and both were excellent motors. The VROs on that vintage were trouble-free, despite their bad rap.

SweetD Thanks, It is a two-stroke. Maintenance I can handle just wanted to know if it was detrimental to expose it to salt water. Also, do you know what the compression is supposed to be on this engine? 2004 Johnson 90hp Bombardier. Thanks again
