Default Grady White or Intrepid.

Hi guys,
As a newbie I'd appreciate any opinions on the following. I am close to getting a GW (Gulfstream), but in the interim someone offered my an Intrepid 26 WA (much older than the GW). I don't know much about Intrepids. Could anyone pass a few opinions on the best decision to take.
I need the boat for island hopping in pretty rough waters, and fishing.
Thanks,
Rupert.

Both are good boats and would really depend on the condition and equipment of the specific boats you are considering. However, as an Intrepid owner, I can tell you if the Intrepid you are considering is in good shape and equipped the way you want it, you cannot go wrong. It is a great boat--built very well with tremendous factory support. That is why they have a long waiting list.

Thanks Guys,
Nice pic, greyg8r.
It is difficult to compare as the GW is practically new, whilst the Intrepid is much older (about 1992 maybe). However, it has a host of equipment (from radar, to pro. fishing plotter and gear, etc.). It is, of couyrse, much cheaper (although not dirt cheap).

I've got the same Intrepid----it's an unbelievably nice ride. As nice and top notch as a Grady is, the Intrepid is a step above in ride, performance, fit and finish and quality of construction. The constuction techniques are superior and no expense is spared in building an Intrepid.

All that being said, I don't think you can go wrong with the Grady, and I'd buy the better "deal". Both very nice for a newbie, or anyone for that matter

Thanks Macomyday,
Nice to have your opinion, too. Assuming the Intrepid is in good shape (I have to check the two engines (2x200 Yamahas) out), how much could the boat be worth?
Thanks,
Rupert.

A '92 with original engines? Probably anywhere from high 30s to low 50s depending on condition. Seems like the early 90s with repowers tend to get 45-60k

I did a ton of research on both boats as my wife is a HUGE Grady fan. Upon showing her the detail work between a new 33 grady express, ie look at the unfinished glass work under the gunnels and in the bilge and the detail work of the Intrepid, she was sold. There's an interesting comparison on yachtsurvey.com on the Intrepid which he compares to a Grady. Personally, and I will get bashed for this because Grady has a great name out there, my 30 plus years on the water with many boats including many years in the US Coast Guard, is that the Grady is NOT in the same class of quality as the Intrepid.
Under the skin of the boat, the detail work is night and day in my humble opinion. And, they are laid up lighter than the grady, a little better performance numbers when considering economy, range and fuel prices. Know that I have a 38 Intrepid on order so my opinion is notably biased. Hope this helps my friend!

You need to provide more details about the boats and be more specific regarding your intended use. What is the age, hours and condition of the engines for each? A repower could cost you $25K or more. Are the electronics on the Intrepid up to date or will they require replacing soon? Both great boats.

INTREPID hands down by a mile. Grady White has nothing on an Intrepid. Read David Pascoes review on the 289 Intrepid on yachtsurvey.com.
FWIW, I have a friend with a grady that is only 1 year old and it has stress cracks all over the bow where the anchor is. By contrast my 7 year old Intrepid has ZERO cracks!

I'm as biased as Scottsmith is and proud of it because chances are that when you own your first Intrepid you will never buy any other brand again!

Thanks guys for some very useful info. I'll be trying the boat out on Saturday or Sunday and will report back early next week.

Intreppy345,
I was thinking along your lines when I posted the thread, but although I had read D. Pascoe's review, I was aware that it was another model, and in view of the age, I wondered whether Intrepid were such good boats as that tested so long back (after all it is 14 years ago).

rupert: the only thing i'm not sure about is when Intrepid started using the stepped lift hull. I don't believe that model year you are looking at has it. However, the NUMBER 1 lesson I have learned when buying a boat is to buy QUALITY, QUALITY, QUALITY. Unless the Intrepid has a hole in it, you can't go wrong with it

I must say I agree with intreppy345 with his comments. The ride on an Intrepid is superior than on a GW. They are two very different boats, they quality of an intrepid is exceptional and the step hull make you ride much smother

Hi Intreppy345,
Actually you have hit the nail on the head with your last comment. One of the reasons for starting the thread was to get the opinions of Grady and Intrepid users, another was to find out something about the boat (I could find little on the web as it is an old model). Intrepid, as we know, has a good reputation for seaworthiness (as does GW), but have they changed the hull since this model, and, if so, how would this affect things?

Both are good boats with very loyal followers go with the boat you feel most comfortable with and that is going to be best used for your application.

Intrepid makes and incredible boat and should not even be compared to a Grady.

Thanks to all for the comments, all of which are very valuable for my decison. I would, however, be really interested to learn more about the evoution of the stepped hull concept on the different models. Are there are no sites dealing with the history of Intrepids?
Rupert.

Intrepid hands down. We have a 2003 348 Walkaround listed on Boat Trader. May be bigger then what you are looking for, but awsome in rough water. Grady and Intrepid are not in the same class. We watched our Intrepid being built from the ground up here in Clearwater at their factory. Our friend is on his 3rd. Intrepid is the best in its class!!!! They are pure quality.

Good luck with whatever you decide
