Default North Up/Course Up

A good friend of mine has his chartplotter on North Up. It drives me nuts when I fish with him sometimes and he wants me to steer for awhile. My question, Is there a specific reason someone would use North Up? It is so much easier/ user friendly to go course up, just makes no sense to me

Default North up

Do you turn your map around when you are driving or do you look at it with the north side up?

LOL I had this exact same situation last Friday. Went to Delaxcroix, LA for a long weekend and took my boat with 2 other buds. Friday we had a guide hired (Captn. Ahab, good fellow) and he went with us in my BlueWave. I have front & rear Humminbird Helix 10 Megas with the LA marsh map chip in the console unit. (Did the same thing lastyear but used one of Ahab's guides instead of himself) Anyway, first few minutes we were out there running through the canals and marsh when Ahab said, "Damn I can't get used to this North UP crap, can you set it on Course Up?" I laughed and flipped through the menu and put it on Course Up for him. But then after I tried using it myself the next day without him aboard, I had to flip it back to North Up as that's just the way I'm wired and anything otherwise screws up my sense of direction. I guess it's from the old days well before GPS when I looked at everything via old aerial/satellite maps and as said above, all road/atlas' are printed North Up so that's just what I'm used to and prefer.

I'm sure it's a "left brain/right brain" thing as well...

you may as well ask, "do you put the toilet paper over the front or the back"

With course up, you go straight, right, or left just like the boat on the chart screen! Too easy.

With north up, if you're heading south, everything is backwards....right course is left turn and left course is right turn. It seems like a good way to hit a jetty!

My generation never really used maps. I mean I did in the Army and some times on road trips but when I was about 24 I got my first GPS and I am a course up guy. I wonder if the guys who grew up with maps are north up vs the younger guys who grew up with GOS are course up?

North up. It's what I'm used to AND I can instantly see if I'm going the wrong way. Pick the wrong route or waypoint and you could run for miles without noticing if you run heads up. I wouldn't, but you might...

I've been using north up for the last 10 years. A lot of friends use course up and I always gave them crap. I have become accustomed to North up and I have never had any trouble with it, until....... One afternoon I got on a late bite in the bay and fished till after sundown. I had a 20 mile run back in at night without being able to follow any tracks. The wind picked up and the bay got rough and it was very difficult for me to stay in the channel using north up. Especially since the channel did not contrast well against the contour lines around it.

I stopped and swapped to course up and it made life a whole lot easier, not going to lie. Now I typically run course up for convenience but never when I'm positioning over a wreck. It is horrible for that. The entire map just spins around and it's a real cluster. For this I will swap back to North up and position over wrecks using my compass and my actual position on the map, not my heading. I look at the waypoint and if the boat is below and to the right of it (SE) I will drive northwest by my compass until I'm over the wreck. Actually if I'm going offshore fishing and I know I'll be fishing a wreck I will flip it back to North up at the dock.

If you have your chart plotter and radar in North up, it allows you to plot your position quick and easy on a paper chart.

Heads up allows you to have a reference when manually plotting a position on a chart is impractical. With heads up you use range rings or parallel index to reference your position.

Both have there place and should be used based on the situation.

if the toilet paper is over the top, it is hanging in the air for you to grab. If it goes around the back, you are wiping the wall . I say North up

Does your compass change to head up/course up (two different things) because that's how you like it?
