Default Yamaha Lower unit woes

Hi guys, I have a Yamaha F250 4 stroke with 425 hrs. I noticed a tiny bit of water in the lower unit oil. This morning, I drained the oil in the foot and replaced with fresh oil using a manual bottle pump thing. Having not done this job myself in quite some time, I filled it from the top screw instead of the bottom. When I got near the end of the bottle, oil started running out of the water inlet hole as I pumped. Did I mess something up by forcing that oil in the wrong hole, or had the seal simply failed and needs to be replaced? Also, how can I rule out any permanent damage done to the lower unit from the water that was in there? I ran it yesterday and it ran beautifully. Thanks in advance.

I have an older 150 2-smoke and one if my guys did the same during a routine LU oil change. We pulled it all apart and found the double stacked shaft seals on top are facing up allowing excess oil out but no water in, over pressure just pukes out around the water pump, spills out and doesn’t hurt anything. We put mine back together (not changing the seals) and used it all last season without a problem after filling the proper way from the bottom. I did take a few oil samples along the way just in case.

You should be ok but don’t chance it, sample it a few times.
