Default Jon boat 6 hp

Hi everyone, would like to know if anyone would share any advice. I just purchased a new 6 hp Suzuki outboard with a 12 foot topper Jon boat and it’s not planing it out. It’s close but it needs a little more push to get her up on plane. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

6 HP is very marginal on a 12 foot Jon boat. If you use a tiller extension, and get up in the center of the boat--it may plane. Don't get too far forward. If the middle position works well, you might consider a side console and remote steering, throttle and shift. Most 6 HP are not set up for remote, so it might take come innovation. Also you may need a different prop. You are probably getting a lot of slip at high RPM. Also some ripples on the water or slightly rocking the boat back and forth may help to break out and get on top.

here you go: 6hp on a 12’ jon boat

as i posted there, it sounds underpowered. i'd go 9.9 to 15 hp minimum

I had a 25hp on a 14' jon boat and it would do around 30mph.

I think you need to go up a bit in size on the engine.

I had a 7.5 hp on a 12' Jon and it would plane with about 200 lbs total load. I had to go to a 9.9 to get it to plane with two people and a dog.

Well this thread popped up just in time... I just bought a 12W topper jon boat with a 5hp mercury yesterday. Don’t take delivery until tomorrow but now have concerns with motor choice. The 12 was rated for a max 5hp which is what I went with and now having second thoughts... I mean I don’t care for a speed demon as I’m going to use it to put around the canal behind my house but would like to get on plane if I want to run somewhere.

appropriate prop "as posted", and a whale tail , it will plane,
i recently offloaded a whale tail i had in the shed to a bloke experiencing the same issue , he messaged me to let me know it did the job and his boat planed for the first time , his motor is a 4.0 , 2 cylinder Johnson on a 10 foot car topper, he wanted a motor that was light enough for him to lift around by himself ,hence the small 4.0 hp, a 9.9 goes up in physical motor size , so unless you are strong enough to wrestle the motor onto the transom , thin stick with the little one and accessorize it to get on the plane. .

Did you ever end up putting a whale tail? My 12w topper with a 5hp Merc runs good with just me but falls just short of getting on plane when it’s me and my buddy. About 400lbs total

My son has a 12’ with an 8hp Nissan and that thing buggies! Hits around 24. Planning is a bit of a problem when I ride it alone but it eventually planes in about 7-9 seconds. Kids in the front of the boat and it rides great. You can also try adjusting the trim and possibly lowering it a bit.

if its just you in the back it will be hard to get up. bring two 5 gallon buckets with you. fill one up and put it in the front and see. if not do the second one. it should be planning by then.

all of the outboards less than 8 hp. are single cylinder motors so they are not made for power. and also rattle and vibrate.

It gets on plane with just me in the boat. That’s not a problem. When I add another person is when I’m having trouble.

So now you're getting a "feeling" when someone else posted a thread about the same subject? Cool........

Smart tabs would help. Maybe raise the motor a hole or two. Can also try a stainless prop.
