High School Shop Class Build
14 Attachment(s)
The boys have been really working hard. They sanded the botton of hull and filled all the low spots and scratches with Alexseal 202 then blocked the complete hull. They have just about finished the trailer, just need to add the rollers. The trailer was blasted and the students painted it and added new fenders. The heads were removed to clean the cooling passages .We decided to install new heads ,thermostats, waterpump and prop shaft seals.
They also removed and built the carbs. |

I took the first thread down because some of the replies were not family friendly. Please keep all replies family friendly.
Thanks |
That's a great project and great to see! We have a youth boat building program where students learn to build dories. More schools should be involved in these types of skills!

Good to see this,
In 1976 my wood working students rebuilt a Barnegat bay sneekbox box that was donated to a seaport museum. Lot of learning took place, ripping planing, steam bending and more. Don't see much of that going on anymore , school boards use the excuse of insurance premiums, has anyone ever asked how much sports insurance costs ? :bashhh::bashhh: Guess my age is showing!:rofl: |
Awesome project. Those young men will never forget it either!!!
|
Good on you for teaching these young men skills they will forever at some point go back to, whether it be as a trade, hobby or deciding if someone is feeding them a line of BS.
As a society, things are changing and if the article I read is correct... 40% of this country's blue collar workforce is set to retire in the next ten years. We are in trouble, and we need new young blood to consider a now much higher paying field across the board with all trades. I just found a beat-up skiff for my kids and my eleven year old son is on it! Step by step, how it works and why. I explain and he does. He's now asking questions for clarity, I love it! Fuel, oxygen and ignition. Simple just like life. Work hard, play hard. Be honest. Things work out. |
Good for you, Tony. I look forward to seeing your crews bring your Carlson back to where it should be. I have owned mine for around 15 years now, same make, age and model as yours. Even with our Carlsons being over 20 years old, the materials, construction and features in them would rival most flats boats built today. Over many years, as a recreational fisherman, a light tackle inshore fishing guide and as a flat boat dealer, I have found my Carlson 17' Back Bay Skiff to be among the best riding, handling and fish able of any I have run.
I hope everyone will be respectful and mature with your thread and you won't see a need to 'take it down'. There is a lot of good info to be passed along with following your progress. You will certainly expose a lot of youth to skills and knowledge needed for what could result in, if not a commercial job, at least a life long obsession such as many of us on THT are afflicted with. Good Luck and keep 'em coming. Capt Joe |

Today we measured and marked the speaker holes. As you can see the console needs a lot of repair but I think the boys are up for it. When we pulled the tank it had a few bad spots so we decided to build a new one. It pressure tested at 30psi and held perfect over night. The boy in the pic built the tank. We also glued some starboard pads to the bottom with 5200 for the tank to sit on. We will epoxy the tank tomorrow. Its back on the dolly so we can start on the deck.We went from a 38 to 35 gallon tank to allow for a easier fit back in.

awesome project. be cool to auction it off when finished to fund next project. auto mechanics and FFA were my two favorite classes in high school.
|
quality welding work on the tank! what are you using to fill holes in the console? I need to do some hole/chip repair on my little boat
|
Very nice project. Looks like their enjoying it and will definitely remember it for life.
|
Kudos to them! I wish I had that opportunity in high school!
|
Glad you decided to repost the build, very cool project! Are you still planning on keeping her?
|
In post #13 pic #6 what are all those motors on top of that shelf for? Do the kids get to rebuild them? Pretty sweet build and class. I wish we had a class like this in high school we had shop classes but we only built small stuff like bridges out of wooden coffee stirrers that had to hold 100#, CO2 wooden cars to race, etc.

Awesome!!!!
