Good thread. I'm eventually going to buy one of these things.

I actually got an email this morning about a new one being released by 3D Robotics. Looks very interesting.

From now on, are all the new DJI Phantoms going to be made with their own cameras built in? It looks like they're trying to weed out the GoPro users.

Not sure about camera built ins.

Another question,
When doing the FPV (First Person View) are there two choices, the thing you wear on your head like virtual reality and a screen that may be on the controller?

Default Fpv

With FPV you can wear goggles or have a screen attached to the radio or setup somewhere. I personally use fatshark goggles. We link through the GoPro2 and we have a separate camera for the fpv sometimes. Works great for filming.

I have changed my fleet up a bit and will get some fresh photos of them up soon. I hope that DJI will still sell some of the newer models without a camera so we can use what we want.

How quick is it to learn to fly, say basic stuff first then to be able to fly around a boat that is running on plane like some of the video we all have watched?
I like when you cannot see the QC operator/flyer using the controller in the boat. Leaves more to the imagination.

Thank you LTS! Great thread! I'll be watching this one.

The new quads have redundant systems (as well as "return to home" modes) to prevent possible fly-aways / crashes. Although this will not prevent all accidents, I think it is a better direction to go (versus waterproofing). Unless you need to take off from or land in water, you should be able to launch / land on your boat or hand-launch/catch.

Malfunction of the auto systems and "return to home" feature is generally what causes flyaways. Sometimes they just decide "home" is somewhere else.

I think that's an unproven theory made popular by some guy that draws a diagram on YouTube. I almost had an accident with a return to home activation but that was my own fault - I let the battery run low and there were trees between the home point and the quad. Luckily I realized what was happening, overrode the fail safe and landed on my own. Yes, the return to home feature would have crashed it but it was performing like it was supposed to. For every time someone posts online about a flyaway (that according to the "expert" operators is a gps glitch) there are many, many more unreported safe auto landings that continue to impress owners and save their quads. And they will keep getting smarter.

We took a double overnighter to Englewood, Florida near Stump Pass on Wednesday. We stayed at Buchan's Landing just on the East side of Lemon Bay a few miles north of Stump Pass. Our goal was to hang out on the sand bars at Stump Pass, no fishing just relaxing in the 82 degree waters. We succeeded! Buchan's landing is within walking distance of downtown Englewood which has an excellent choice of bars and restaurants. Our favorite was Engelwwods on Dearborn, great food and live music. The breakfast at Mangos bistro was excellent also.

I also took my quad copter and flew it at Stump Pass, here is the VIDEO

Thumbs up Virtual Reality

Check these numbers:

The Developing VR and Commercial Drone Market

Based on a Business Insider report the VR hardware market is set to expand to $2.8 billion by 2020, up from just $37 million this year. Given this macro environment, GoPro stands ready to help fuel the growth through content generation.

A separate Business Insider report has also estimated the commercial drone market to lead the growth charge with a 19% CAGR from now to 2020 and a market size of approximately, $1.8 billion. This is contrasted with only a 5% CAGR for the military market.

In another report by Piper Jaffray analysts, they have estimated the VR and drone market to rise to over $5 billion by 2020 and over $65 billion by 2025. These are truly remarkable expansion odds.

I've been saying for a while that commercial applications are so unlimited for this that it will be here quicker than we think.

Local guy is selling a phantom vision 2, with carbon fiber blades, blade protectors, and the larger landing base for $600. Looks in good shape, said he doesn't use it and needs money for another project.

Good price or should I just buy new?

I would buy a new one, new battery, new motors, no crashes, no modifications, WARRANTY. Unless you know how to hook it up to the software Naza Assistant or know someone that can check all parameters, IMU, compass, current firmware etc walk away.
