You couldn't get me up in one of those even if you told me cindy crawford was waiting for me when I got in.....

I wonder if the pilots and riders of those take parachutes with them? I mean what do they do if something goes wrong?

You don't know what you're missing. It's very cool. The only noise is the occasional burner blast (and the dogs on the ground barking) and there is no wind because you are moving with the wind. It's amazing how they can "steer" the balloons by going to different altitudes. They play a game called Fox and Hounds. One balloon leaves, lands a few miles away, and sets out a target. Then the "hounds" launch and try and drop their bean bag as close to the target as they can. A LOT of them actually hit the target. Last time we went our pilot won the competition.

BTW, no parachutes as a general rule but still very cool.

Here's a couple pics from last year.

Yea dont get me wrong. I would love to try it but my mind would start freaking me out.

Has there ever been any disasters? I mean what do you do if things go wrong? Can things go wrong?

I was apprehensive as hell my first flight but it turned out really good. I did hold on the whole time as the basket hit me around the upper thigh. There haven't been any problems in the 25+ years they have had the rally here but you will occasionally see in the news where balloons and power lines don't get along. They do carry maps showing towers, power lines, etc.
