Default I know this is illegal but,,,,,,,

The Sarasota area boaters will recognise this fellow. He hangs out in the intracoastal near a bridge in Nokomis. His name is Beggar and he certainly lives up to it! He reportedly has bitten several people who have offered food or just stuck their hand out pretending to offer food. He has been here for over 10 years and is a very popular and entertaining sight. He will jump, spin and tail walk just like the Sea World dolphins. He drives the folks at NOAA and MOTE Marine lab crazy because he doesn't follow the rules of animal/human interaction! Here's a few pics from 2 weeks ago.

He does put on a great show when you idle through that area. A few years ago my neighbor was showing some of his out of town friends how easy it was to pet beggar. Unfortunately he came home with a few stitches on his finger and his wife telling him "I told you so".

You folks need to understand the picture posting thing. You hit submit, then add on the pics, which can take awhile. I don't know how many times I got the "I can't see nothing but white" reply 1 minute after starting to post pics.

Give it time.

Nice pics signman.

Worse than the pelicans! Those are my fish! The dolphin can go catch his own.

Would you try to pet or feed a shark? If an animal has teeth, it can bite. Always amazes me how people fail to think about this, especially whe the animal looks cute and is supposed to be friendly. A 600 lb mammal, looking for a handout can bite and I am sure it hurts.

If he's learned to live off of the fat of the land, then
more power to him. Why should he be any different
than the people who live off of the social welfare
system in this country?

CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And anybody stupid enough to get their hands close
enough to be bitten, probably deserves it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's nothing obviously illegal happening in the pics.

According to the MMPA, you cannot approach closer than (some distance) to a marine mammal. They, however, are free to approach you as they wish. You cannot "harass" them, but they are free to harass you.

Feeding is another issue, and is, as far as I am aware, in violation with the MMPA in all instances (including the manatee/lettuce thing.)

Nice pics, BTW.

That's awesome, my twin 4 year old daughters would go crazy if they could see a wild dolphin that close. They have seen them from our boat but the dolphins keep about a 15' distance unless they are riding our bow, rarely that happens though, and for some odd reason I don't let my girls lean over the bow when it does happen so they don't get to see it.

My dog loves to bark at Beggar and Beggar usually responds with a jump or two for us. I will take her out this weekend and see if I can get a picture of Beggar jumping at the stern of my boat. Would my dog be harassing Beggar?
