This brings up a question - what the heck do manatees drink? When they are in salt water, what do they do for water? Can they drink the salty stuff and expel the salt? And what do other 100% marine mammals do (whales, dolphin, etc)?

I would have said "my idiot neighbor was watering the manatees". That way when the guy with the "Smokey the bear" hat comes by you can point to another house and say "go ask that guy".

Hey guys, don't blame the manatees for the actions of the SMC idiots.

These animals need to be watched out for and proteced just like, or even more so, other aquatic species.

It's when the SMC and other extreme conservation groups can post to threads like this from sportsmen that we do ourselves harm - meant in jest or not.

We will often see them hanging around the sewer drains drinking the runoff after a rainstorm. That's probably a better place for them to get their fill then from my "neighbors" illegal interaction of offering them fresh water from a hose!

Nothing better than drinking oil, antifreeze, lawn fertilizer, cigarette butts and whatever else is in the runoff!! But then I guess that's not illegal.

Whole, just like cajun turkey's.

You just need a big-ass pot.

Why is it illegal to give them fresh water from a hose? Not being funny but we don't have manatees up here and I don't understand what harm it might do.

Giving them fresh water from a hose is considered "feeding them" and it is illegal to "feed" any wild animal that is protected under either the Marine Mammal Protection Act or the Endagered Species Act.

Manatees live in both fresh and salt water. From what I have read, biologists think they usually only "drink" fresh or slightly brackish water and don't generally "drink" saltwater. I don't think they really know why other than that is the way their system is made.

There are freshwater springs that seep out from the bottom around here.

according to the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute:

Do manatees need fresh water to survive?

It is unknown whether fresh water is essential for manatees’ survival, but they do like it. Manatees can be found in rivers and springs as well as congregating at fresh water drainage pipes. Some people attract manatees to their docks by letting them drink water from ordinary garden hoses. This is illegal and endangers the mammals because it brings them to areas of high boat traffic.
