Couple tips:
1. Don't leave valuables in a rental. HI is safe but petty theft, especially from rentals is an issue.
2. Drive to the N. Shore via Kam Hwy. longer trip but much nicer than sitting on a freeway. You can always go back via the H2
3. If you fish discuss the fish split before you go. Most charters count on selling the catch so work out ahead if you want to take some.

Spots worth hitting
Maleakehana State Park- near Kahuku- great park with an island offshore you can wade /swim to. Back of the island has a half moon shaped beach which is really nice
Kua Aina burger shop in Haleiwa- I know it sounds odd but they make a great burger
Sunset cocktails at Haleiwa Joes
Snorkel Hanauma Bay- touristy but some of the best snorkeling you'll do.
Leonard's Malasada truck- find out where it is and find that red & white truck
Kin Wah Chop Suey (Kaneohe)- best Chinese place on Oahu. Real Chinese not the crap we get.
