I've been living on an island all my life with the exception of military time, not nearly the type of island you're referring to, but I know a lot about the isolation and such of island life.
The island I'm on is just over 100 miles long and a little over 20 miles wide at its widest point. A little over 10 miles from one end of the road system to the other and all of our groceries and such come by barge. Fair air service and very poor ferry service, it's not for everybody.
