That said, it reminds me one of one of my favorite college professors saying (when asked how she wanted us to address her: Dr, Ms, Professor...) "I don't care what you call me, as long as it isn't disrespectful." She truly was ok if we chose to use her first name.

Whatever they are doing with the flag is part of their celebration and the celebration of their Nation/team. If no disrespect is intended, I'm ok with it. If the US Olympic Committee wants to tell them not to do, I'm ok with that too.
I think it means altering the flag as a garment--my opinion/interpretation. In the case of athletes, I think it is a banner of pride.
