I went to a top boarding school for high school. All of our teachers, for the most part, lived on campus. They had office hours, emails, and home phones that we could use to reach them. We were required to play a sport every trimester, had a short school day on Saturday, and two hours of study hall Sunday though Thursday nights. For the most part, we didn't have 6 hours of homework a night. Most of the time it could be done in study hall but we also had college like schedules where we didn't meet every day.

I have watched some of the public schools here send home a ton more work that my school ever thought about. I don't know the answer, but it seems to me that the more time the teachers spend in the classroom, the less homework. This is based on limited experience obviously since I only had to do high school once
