Easiest bait for rookie bottom fishing is squid. Everything will eat it, and it doesn't get robbed that easy. Fresh dead menhaden/chunk mullet is also tough to beat.

Grab a jig set from one of the vendors on here for far cheaper than what you'd expect, and try that too, bottom fishing can get boring as hell, its fun to have an option to do if the fish aren't biting.

Or live bait troll. Very slow, just enough to keep the boat in a straight line. Kingfish will be your target, but you'll get plenty of by catch with sharks, cudas, etc, which are fun to fight but not fun to eat. Not that kings are either but they are a. Blast to catch.
