Usually buy new, and replace when they are getting near 200k - which depending on what is happening in life and business is between 5-10 years. I buy something I like, trick it out a little, and then take really good care of it.

My Avalanche is at 140k - I plan to keep it "forever" as the tow / travel / need lots of seats vehicle. Can't get a new one, and it suits me.

I have used new VW's for commuters and had great luck. The new twist is my parents being elderly. They are driving my last Jetta that I gave them at 100k, and I think I will swap out theirs with every other one of mine when it hits 100k.
