Default Skin Cancer Checks

Due to a few 'suspicious' moles I have been doing bi-annual skin cancer checks with a dermatologist. Numerous biopsies, but so far nothing dangerous. I attribute this to many years of boating, with a 1960's attitude toward sunsreen - i.e. none. I'm paying the price for that now that I'm in my 50's. Knock on wood everything is going fine so far.

I'm a little more surprised by what I'm finding with my kids. I have a 14 and a 16 year old and both of them have been referred to dermatologists for skin checks due to 'suspicious' moles. Are skin checks of this kind more common now nationally due to increased awareness of skin cancer or is it a South Florida thing due to our heavy solar exposure? I'm clearly going to be responsible about taking the kids in for their skin checks. I am just trying to get a feel for how common the process is for the under 30 group. Thanks.
