I mow 1.5 acres and finally learned my lesson after going through a couple of the Home Depot MTD cheapo's. Like you I did not want to step up to the John Deere. When the new models came out, I bought a Cub Cadet "zero turn" which was on clearance, it fell right in between the John Deere and the cheapo MTD's. I am very happy with it, and well worth the extra money. For some reason the John Deere's were not offered at clearance prices, only the other brands. Right now is a good time to buy since most riding mowers in stock will probably be on clearance at this time of the year. It is my understanding that that MTD owns cub cadet but they are definitely not just the same re-badged mowers.
