Stick with the oil based. Much better penetration and adhesion. On a side note, when I redid my kitchen, I tried water based contact cement to make my counter tops. Worst move ever for me . The adhesive properties dont hold up.

Did my dining room oak floor with oil based poly 7 years ago. Still looks great.
Just my opinion.
