If you are hoping to get the best picture out of your existing 480p DVDs, then neither Blue-ray nor HD DVD makes sense. They upconvert those DVDs from 480p to 1080i or 1080p. It looks much better, but you can buy many upconverting DVD players for way cheaper to do that same thing.

As I understand it today, HD DVD and Blu-ray are the only true 1080p sources. The ultimate in picture quality is an either an HD DVD or BR player hooked up to a TV that is 1080p native. If the TV is not true 1080p, then the new HD players are probably not worth the cash.
