Default Please explain wiring diagram for me

Scott,

You said at no time do you want both motors connected together and running. Does this mean neither switch should be in the "both" position?

----------------
Thats correct. (see my earlier post above for why)
----------------
If you get into trouble and need to use the other battery to start a motor. Make sure the "Good" motor has it's switch in the off position while starting the other. Once started you can switch the "bad" motor to it's normal position, and then go ahead start the good motor in it's normal position.

Couold you explain this again? Let's say the port side battery is dead, for instance. How should I start the two motors? Am I going to damage anything by changing the switch positions while the engines are running?

-----------------
Put the stbd switch at "off", the port to "2".
Start the port engine and when running nicely, set the port switch to "1". Then set the stbd switch to "2" start the stbd engine, and off you go.

As long as you dont turn the switches to off, or to where both motors are connected together, you can use the switch while running.
